Anurag Kashyap Says Sandeep Reddy Vanga Is Unlike ‘Toxic’ People In Bollywood

Toxic Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap, who is often questioned about his support for Sandeep Reddy Vanga, opened up about the reasons that made him meet the ‘Animal’ director. Kashyap compared his experience while making ‘Bombay Velvet’ to his own and said that Vanga’s success gave him satisfaction.

During a chat with Zoom, the director called out ‘toxic’ people in the industry who pretend to be someone they are not.

“I like the guy. I have no problem with him. Unlike many in the industry who pretend to be someone they are not, he is honest. The former species, I think, is even more toxic. But Vanga is honest. I love nothing more than honesty, regardless of other people’s honesty issues. I love talking to him,” he said.

As Sandeep Reddy Vanga faces criticism for glorifying misogyny in his film ‘Animal’, filmmaker Anurag Kashyap shared a photo with Vanga. He called the film “the biggest change in Hindi cinema for the longest time (for better or worse) and a film whose impact (for better or worse) is undeniable.”

Anurag Kashyap used to call him ‘Manhoos’.

Talking about the movie ‘Animal’ he said, “Nobody can deny the impact Animal has made. It made the action scenes that we have seen in the movies look fake. It changed a lot in terms of actual action scenes, and it was a three-and-a-half-hour adult film. They cut my film Bombay Velvet to two hours and fifty minutes and censored the scenes as they pushed for a U/A certificate. It was my most censored film and Pahlaj Nihalani (the then chairman of the Central Board of Film Certification-CBFC) personally ensured that scenes from it were cut. I got no support. At the time of Bombay Velvet I was under a lot of pressure regarding the film’s recovery and opening. But it didn’t feel like mine anymore. I should have been stubborn like Sandeep and fought to maintain my version. You can argue with his creative vision and he leaves room for argument. But what do we do in general? We attack and cancel people. We do not discuss or argue.

“I never had a support system. Some called me ‘Manhoos’ and ‘Pugal’. I was easily labeled and I felt lonely and isolated. I felt like everyone was isolating and attacking Sandeep instead of talking to him. My daughter was very upset when I posted about the animal. My friends from the industry were upset, I called them to my house and we had a long discussion about it. “I want to call out the hypocrisy of those who criticized Animal, insulted the film, canceled it and then went and watched it and canceled it twice,” he added.
