KP Sharma Oli Re-appointed as Prime Minister of Nepal

In Nepal, KP Sharma Oli was re-appointed as the Prime Minister of the country by President Vidya Devi Bhandari.
Oli was administered the oath of office by the President on May 14, 2021. Now, he must prove that he has majority support in the House within 30 days.
This will be his third term as Prime Minister. He was appointed as PM from 12 October 2015 to 4 August 2016 and then from 15 February 2018 to 13 May 2021.
The decision to re-appoint Oli was taken after none of the opposition party could secure majority seats in the House to form a new government or apply for it in the provided time frame (by 9 pm on 13 May 2021).
It must be noted that, on 10 May 2021, Oli failed to obtain a vote of confidence in the House of Representatives, gaining only 93 of the total 232 votes cast, which was 43 votes short of reaching the 136-vote majority required to win the confidence vote.

China becomes the world’s first country to ban synthetic cannabinoids

China will become the first country in the world to ban all synthetic cannabinoid substances. This ban is expected to be implemented from July 1.
The move comes as China tries to curb the manufacturing & trafficking of the drug.
Synthetic cannabinoids are highly camouflaged, as some are found in e-cigarette oil, and some in individual tobacco petals, or chopped tobacco made from plant trunks and leaves. In Xinjiang, it is commonly nicknamed “Natasha”.

PM Kisan Samman Nidhi: Eighth Instalment released

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has recently released the eighth installment of Prime Minister Kisan Samman Nidhi.
The Indian government transfers Rs.6,000 to the account of small and marginal farmers. These funds are transferred in three installments.
The first instalment of Rs.2,000 is made between April and June.
The second Instalment is made between August and November.
The third instalment is made between December and March.

Punjab CM Amarinder Singh Declares Malerkotla as 23rd District

Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh declared Malerkotla as the 23rd district of the state on 14 May 2021 on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr.
Malerkotla is a Muslim-dominated area and has been carved out of the Sangrur district of the state.
The government had promised that Malerkotla will be declared a district soon in 2017.

RBI cancels licence of United Co-operative Bank

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has revoked the license of United Co-operative Bank Limited based in Bagnan, West Bengal on insufficient capital, regulatory non-compliance.
Through an order on May 10, 2021, the central bank has barred the cooperative lender from conducting banking business on May 13, 2021, closing the business.
RBI said it cancelled the licence as United Co-operative Bank did not have adequate capital and earning prospects.
“As such, it does not comply with the provisions of section 11(1) and section 22(3)(d) read with section 56 of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949.

Former CBI officer K Ragothaman passes away

Former CBI officer K Ragothaman has died. He was the Chief Investigating Officer of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Rajiv Gandhi assassination. He was awarded the Police Medal in 1988 and the President’s Medal in 1994.
Ragothaman has authored many books including Conspiracy to Kill Rajiv Gandhi, Third Degree Crime Investigation Management and Crime and the Criminal. He joined the CBI in 1968 as a sub-inspector of police.

Leading philanthropist and Times Group chairperson, Indu Jain has passed away due to complications related to Covid-19.
A prominent Indian media personality, Indu Jain was the chairman of India’s largest media conglomerate, Bennett, Coleman & Company Limited, also known as the Times Group, which owns the Times of India and all other major newspapers.

Owned by the Wadia Group, GoAir has rebranded itself as ‘Go First’ with the new motto “You Come First”.
The decision to rebrand after 15 years is part of the company’s attempt to operate the carrier in an ULCC (ultra-low-cost carrier) airline model, to tide over the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
