- India’s First Mobile COVID-19 testing lab, developed by IISC, launched in Bengaluru
- The Karnataka Government has launched a first-of-its-kind mobile COVID-19 laboratory on 5th August 2020.
- The unique lab has been developed by the Indian Institute of Science (IISc).
- The mobile lab is the first Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR)-approved mobile RT-PCR Covid-19 testing laboratory in India.
- The Mobile Infection Testing and Reporting (MITR) lab is capable of performing 9,000 RT-PCR (reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction) tests per month with 100% accurate results within four hours.
- The MITR lab has been handed over to Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS) in Bengaluru.
- India extends Line of Credit worth 18 million dollars to Maldives for Fisheries Development
- The Government of India has provided a Line of Credit (LoC) of USD 18 million to the Government of Maldives for expansion of fishing facilities at the Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO).
- The fund will be used for development of fish collection and storage facilities and for setting up of Tuna Cooking Plant and Fish Meal Plant.
- The grant is part of a US$800 million line of credit offered by India with a 20-year repayment period and a moratorium of 5 years.

- The first Heart Failure Biobank in the country has come up at the National Centre for Advanced Research and Excellence in HF (CARE-HF) at the Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology (SCTIMST), Kerala.
- The Biobank is open to study genetic, metabolomics and proteomic markers of health outcomes in heart-failure patients.
- Biobanks are an important resource of collections of high-quality biological human samples that can be used to understand molecular pathways and to improve the diagnosis, prognosis and treatment of heart failure.
- The biospecimens include blood, serum and tissue samples obtained during open-heart surgery and peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) and genomic DNA collected from heart-failure patients.

- Mangdechhu Hydroelectric Project in Bhutan gets Brunel Medal
- Bhutan’s India-aided Mangdechhu Hydroelectric Project was awarded the Brunel Medal awarded by the London-based Institute of Civil Engineers (ICE).
- The award was given as a symbol of excellence in civil engineering within the industry and was handed over by Indian envoy to Bhutan, Ruchira Kamboj, to Lyonpo Loknath Sharma, chairman of the Mangdechhu Hydroelectric Project Authority.

- The project will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2.4 million tonnes every year.

- Veteran CPI(M) leader and former West Bengal Minister Shyamal Chakraborty passes away of COVID-19
- A senior CPI(M) leader and former West Bengal Transport Minister Shyamal Chakraborty has passed away. He was 76 years old.
- Chakraborty served as the Transport Minister of West Bengal thrice from 1982 to 1996.
- He was also a Rajya Sabha member for two terms.

- Veteran television actor Sameer Sharma is no more.
- The 44-year-old actor committed suicide by hanging himself from the kitchen ceiling of his house on 5 August 2020.

- India has marked the 7th National Handloom Day to showcase the legacy of the Indian handloom industry.

- The whole nation will mark the day to showcase the legacy of the Indian handloom industry and to honour the weavers across the country. It was first observed in 2015 by the Govt of India.

- Ladakh launches ‘Pani Maah’ to raise awareness about clean water
- ‘Pani Month’ or Jal Month has been started in Ladakh to make the villagers aware about the importance of clean water.
- The Ladakh government has also announced a reward of Rs.25 lakh for the first block of each district to achieve ‘Har Ghar Jal’ status.
- The ‘Pani Maah’ campaign will adopt a three-pronged approach – water quality testing, planning and water supply strategy, and focusing on seamless functioning of Pani Sabha in villages.
- Only 11.75 per cent of rural households in Ladakh have access to tap water connections. The Pani Maah campaign is expected to expedite the implementation of the Jal Jeevan Mission in the union territory.

- Tokyo Olympics 2020: Bajrang Punia wins Olympic wrestling bronze medal
- Indian wrestler Bajrang Punia has won an Olympic wrestling bronze medal match in the men’s freestyle 65kg category after an 8-0 win over Kazakhstan’s Daulat Niyazbekov.
- Punia became the sixth Indian wrestler to finish on the Olympic podium after KD Jadhav, Sushil Kumar, Yogeshwar Dutt, Sakshi Malik and Ravi Kumar Dahiya. This is the second time after the 2012 London Olympics that two Indian wrestlers have won medals in the same Games.
- Neeraj Chopra wins Olympic gold medal in Javelin throw
- Neeraj Chopra has won a Gold medal for India in the javelin throw event at Tokyo Olympics. With a throw of 87.03 metres in his first attempt, Neeraj killed the competition.
- In his second he improved it to 87.58m and that turned out to be the golden throw. Except for Viteszalav Veslay of the Czech Republic who threw 86.67m none of his rivals including world champion Johannas Vetter fell by wayside.
- This is India’s 7th medal at Tokyo 2020, the best ever medal haul for India at a single edition of the Games. Neeraj Chopra’s Gold is also India’s second-ever individual Gold medal at the Olympics, after Abhinav Bindra in Shooting.
