International News

  1. Global Trade Surges to $32 Trillion Record in 2022 Says UN
  • The value of global trade is set to reach a new record this year, rising nearly 12 percent to an estimated $32 trillion, according to a United Nations report that signaled a recession in 2023.
  • “Substantial trade growth during the past year was mainly due to an increase in the value of energy products traded,” the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development said in the report.
  • Merchandise trade increased to $25 trillion, up nearly 10 percent from the previous year. As per the report, trade in services grew by 15 percent year-on-year to nearly $7 trillion.
  1. US Announces Historic Nuclear Fusion Breakthrough
  • The United States has declared nuclear fusion success, a historic step towards the promise of ‘near-infinite’ clean energy and could help in the fight to halt climate change.
  • Researchers at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) in California demonstrated for the first time that more energy is produced in a fusion reaction than was used to ignite it, called a net energy gain, the US Department of Energy said.
  • Scientists use high-energy laser beams to achieve these temperatures, also known as inertial fusion.
  • In the international collaborative project called ITER in southern France, in which India is a partner, very strong magnetic fields have been used for the same purpose which is another method of producing this energy.
  1. G-7 Agrees $15.5B Energy Deal with Vietnam to Cut Emissions
  • A group of nine rich industrialized nations approved a deal to provide Vietnam with $15.5 billion to help the Southeast Asian nation move faster from coal power to renewable energy, cutting its climate-damaging pollution.
  • The Group of Seven major economies, along with Norway and Denmark, said in a statement that the aim is to help Vietnam reduce its emissions to “net zero” by 2050, a goal that experts say needs to be met globally to cap global warming at 1.5 degrees Celsius.
  • The Just Energy Transition Partnership with Vietnam is among a series of agreements that developing and rich nations are negotiating. The first such deal was signed with South Africa last year, and a similar agreement was reached with Indonesia last month.

National News

  1. India To Be First Country To Auction SatCom Spectrum
  • Telecom regulator TRAI chairman PD Vaghela said India will be the first country to auction spectrum for satellite communication and it should be designed to attract investment in the sector.
  • Speaking at a Broadband India Forum summit on SATCOM, Vaghela said the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) will soon make recommendations to various ministries to give necessary permissions for satellite communication.
  • Satellite communication refers to any communication link that involves the use of an artificial satellite in its propagation path.

  1. FINA World Swimming Championships 2022: Chahat Arora Sets National Record in 100m Breaststroke
  • In Swimming, Indian swimmer Chahat Arora set a national record in the women’s 100-meter breaststroke at the FINA World Swimming Championships 2022 in Melbourne, Australia.
  • Chahat will participate in the women’s 50m breaststroke event. Siva Sridhar will compete in the 100-meter individual medley.
  • FINA is the International Swimming Federation. Chahat Arora completed the 100-meter breaststroke race in 1 minute, 13.13 seconds.
  • The Federation Internationale de Natation (FINA) is the world governing body for aquatic sports such as swimming, diving, Waterpolo, and synchronized and open water swimming.

  1. Indo-Nepal Joint Training Exercise “SURYA KIRAN-XVI” Begins at Nepal Army Battle School
  • The 16th Edition of Indo-Nepal joint training Exercise “SURYA KIRAN-XVI” between India and Nepal will be conducted at Nepal Army Battle School, Saljhandi (Nepal), from 16 – 29 December 2022.
  • Exercise “SURYA KIRAN” is conducted annually between India and Nepal with the aim to enhance interoperability in jungle warfare & counter-terrorism operations in mountainous terrain and HADR under UN mandate.
  • Surya Kiran is a bilateral joint military exercise between India and Nepal. Indian Army and Nepal Army participate in the Surya Kiran exercise.
  • The biannual exercise, which takes place alternately in both countries, aims to establish military relations in inaccessible mountainous areas by the soldiers of both countries; provide humanitarian assistance under disaster management; get training in anti-terrorist operations, and build interoperability and share expertise between the two countries.
  • The 15th edition of the Indo-Nepal joint military training exercise Surya Kiran was held on September 20, 2021, at Pithoragarh in Uttarakhand.
