  1. PM Modi Launches Three E-100 Ethanol Dispensing Stations in Pune Under Pilot Project on the occasion of WED 2021
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually addressed the World Environment Day event, which was jointly organised by the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas and the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change.
  • During the programme, PM Modi has also released “Report of the Expert Committee on Road Map for Ethanol Blending in India 2020-2025”.
  • The theme of the report is ‘promotion of biofuels for better environment’.
  • Apart from this, he also launched Pilot Project of E 100 ethanol dispensing stations at three locations in Pune, for the production and distribution of ethanol across the country, because ethanol have a better impact on the environment as well as on the lives of farmers.
  • The government has re-set a target of 20 percent ethanol blending in petrol by 2025. Earlier this target was to be met by 2030.
  • As a part of WED 2021, the Government of India has issued an E-20 notification directing oil companies to sell ethanol blended petrol with a percentage of ethanol up to 20% with effect from April 1, 2023; and BIS specifications E12 and E15 for higher ethanol blends.

  1. ICICI Bank Partners SWIFT to offer instant cross-border inward remittances facility
  • ICICI Bank has tied up with Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunications (Swift) to offer a facility called ‘Swift GPI Instant’ for cross-border payments.
  • This facility helps overseas partner banks to send instant remittances on behalf of their customers to the beneficiary in India and the beneficiary will get the credit to the bank account instantly.
  • The ‘SWIFT gpi Instant’ offers instant transfer of up to Rs 2 lakh personal remittance into the beneficiary account.
  • With this ICICI Bank is the first lender in Asia-Pacific and second globally to offer ‘Swift GPI Instant’ facility for cross-border payments.

  1. French Novelist David Diop wins 2021 International Booker Prize
  • Veteran French novelist David Diop has won the prestigious International Booker Prize for the year 2021.
  • He has been chosen for his book translated into English as “At Night All Blood is Black” based on World War I.
  • The Paris-born writer is the first French novelist to win the prize.
  • The book has been translated into English by Anna Moskovakis.
  • The prize carries a prize money of £50,000 ($70,850), which will be divided equally between the author and the translator.
  • The International Booker Prize is an international literary prize awarded annually to a single book that is translated into English and published in the UK or Ireland.
  1. Indian-Origin Photographer Thomas Vijayan Wins Nature TTL Photographer of the Year 2021
  • Thomas Vijayan from Kerala, now settled in Canada, has won the 2021 Nature TTL Photography Award for his photograph of an orangutan clinging to a tree.
  • The photograph is titled ‘The World is Going Upside Down’.
  • Vijayan was selected as the overall winner of the competition for Nature TTL Photographer of the Year 2021 from over 8,000 entries, with a grand prize of £1,500 (Rs1.5 lakh).
  • Nature TTL is the world’s leading online nature photography resource.

  1. Novak Djokovic wins 2021 Belgrade Open Tennis Tournament to lift 83rd ATP trophy
  • In Tennis, the world No. 1 Novak Djokovic (Serbia) defeated world No. 255 Alex Molcan (Slovakia), 6-4, 6-3, in the final to win the men’s singles final of Belgrade Open tournament and eventually lift his 83rd ATP trophy.
  • This was the first edition of the tournament.
  • With 83 career titles, Djokovic has now become the fifth-most successful player of all time, after Rafael Nadal (88), Ivan Lendl (94), Roger Federer (103) and Jimmy Connors (109).

  • United Nations Russian Language Day is observed annually on 06 June.
