  1. Yoon Suk Yeol elected as new South Korean President 
  • Eun Suk-yol has been declared the winner of the 2022 South Korean presidential election to be elected as the country’s new president. He is scheduled to assume office as the President on May 10, 2022, for a fixed term of five years. Eun Suk-yol will replace current President Moon Jae-in.
  • With over 98 percent of the votes counted, Yoon received 48.6 percent of the vote against his rival Lee Jae-myung’s 47.8 percent. Yoon is to take office in May and complete a five-year term as leader of the world’s 10th largest economy.

  • The Hungarian Parliament has elected Kaitlin Novak, a close aide of Prime Minister Viktor Orban, as the first female President of the European Union. Nowak, who most recently served as Minister of Family Policy, portrayed her election as a victory for women.
  • She was elected to a mostly ceremonial role in parliament by 137 votes to 51, dominated by Orban’s right-wing Fidesz party, ahead of opposition challenger Peter Rona, an economist.
  • Nowak will replace Janos Eder, co-founder of Orbán’s governing right-wing Fidesz party, who has held the position since 2012. She will assume office after Eder’s term ends on May 10.
  1. IMF board approves $1.4 billion emergency support for Ukraine
  • The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has approved $1.4 billion in emergency aid for Ukraine to finance expenditures and enhance the balance of payments. Ukraine has turned to funding from allies and international institutions to support its economy since the Russian offensive began on 24 February.
  • The disbursements under the IMF’s Rapid Financing Instrument (RFI), equivalent to 50% of Ukraine’s quota in the IMF, will help meet immediate spending needs in the short term, while helping to catalyze financing from other partners.

  1. Haryana’s CM announced ‘Sushma Swaraj Award’ for women
  • Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar while presenting the state budget has announced ‘Sushma Swaraj Puraskar’ for women for their significant achievements or contribution in various walks of life in international and national fields. The Sushma Swaraj Award will carry a prize money of Rs 5 lakh along with a citation.
  • Sushma Swaraj was a Supreme Court lawyer as well as an Indian politician. She was a senior member of the Bharatiya Janata Party, who served as India’s foreign minister during the first Narendra Modi government (20142019). After Indira Gandhi, she was the second woman to hold the position.

  1. NaBFID to be regulated as AIFI under RBI Act
  • The Reserve Bank of India has announced that the National Bank for Financing Infrastructure and Development (NaBFID) will be regulated and supervised as an All India Financial Institution (AIFI) under the RBI Act, 1934. NaBFID will be regulated and supervised by RBI as one. AIFI under Section 45L and 45N of the Reserve Bank of India Act, 1934.
  • Presently RBI has four AIFIs namely EXIM Bank, NABARD, NHB and SIDBI. NABFID will be the fifth AIFI under RBI. NaBFID has been set up as a Development Financial Institution (DFI) to support the development of long-term infrastructure financing in India.
