  • Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau has invoked never-before-used emergency powers to support provinces in ending the blockades and public disorder that have gripped Ottawa for 18 days at the hands of participants in the so-called “Freedom Convoy.”

  1. Germany re-elects President Frank-Walter Steinmeier for second term
  • German President, Frank-Walter Steinmeier has been re-elected for a second term of five years by a special parliamentary assembly. This is also the final term for Steinmeier, which he won with 71% of the vote.
  • The special assembly was made up of the members of parliament of the lower house and representatives of Germany’s 16 states. Steinmeier was first elected as the president on February 12, 2017, with 74% of the vote.
  • Before first becoming president in 2017, Steinmeier, 66, served two stints as Chancellor Angela Merkel’s foreign minister and earlier was chief of staff to Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder.

  1. Israel became first country to allow drones in civilian airspace 
  • Israel has become the first country to allow drone flights in civilian airspace. The Hermes Starliner unmanned system was issued certification by the Israeli Civil Aviation Authority and was manufactured and developed by the Israeli defense electronics company Elbit Systems.
  • The UAV will be used for agriculture, environment, public welfare, economic activities and benefit against crime. For safety reasons, international aviation regulations prohibit uncertified aircraft from flying over civilian airspace, limiting the operation of UAVs to isolated airspace.

  1. Indian Railways to set up country’s biggest Wrestling Academy
  • Ministry of Railways has approved setting up of a state-of-the-art Wrestling Academy at Kishanganj, Delhi in Indian Railways.
  • The wrestling academy will be the largest in India and will be equipped with advanced training facilities to promote the sport of wrestling in the country. The project will be set up at an estimated cost of Rs 30.76 crore.
  • According to the ministry, the national transporter has played an important role in promoting wrestling in the country and most of the elite wrestlers in India are from the Indian Railways.
  • The academy will provide the best sports facilities to the players and will give a chance to many budding wrestlers to become champions in the times to come.
  1. India to replace diesel by renewable energy in agriculture by 2024 

  • Union Energy Minister RK Singh has announced that India will use zero-diesel in agriculture by 2024 and replace fossil fuels with renewable energy.
  • For this, states should develop action plans to achieve the targets and specific agencies dedicated to energy efficiency and conservation.
  • The initiative is a part of the government’s commitment to increase the share of non-fossil fuels by 2030 and become net-zero emitters by 2070.
  • The Union Minister chaired a virtual meeting with Additional Chief Secretaries and Principal Secretaries of Power in the States for cooperation between the Central and State Governments to achieve the energy transition goals.

  1. BoB will acquire Union Bank’s stake in IndiaFirst Life Insurance
  • Bank of Baroda will acquire Union Bank of India’s 21% stake in IndiaFirst Life Insurance Company. It is a joint venture between Bank of Baroda, Union Bank of India and Carmel Point Investments.
  • Currently, BoB holds 44% in IFIC, 26% by Carmel Point Investments India and 30% by UBI. This acquisition is in pursuance of a ‘right of first offer’ made by UBI to sell its 21% stake in IndiaFirst Life to the existing shareholders of IndiaFirst Life.
  • IndiaFirst Life Insurance Company will continue with the longterm agency distribution agreements with both the banks (BoB and UBI) even after the sale of this stake.
  • Bank of Baroda’s domestic presence is spread across 8,185 branches and 11,535 ATMs and cash recyclers supported by self-service channels. The Bank has a significant international presence with a network of 96 overseas offices spread across 18 countries.

  1. CBI finds India’s biggest bank fraud of Rs 22,842 cr, books ABG Shipyard
  • The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has registered a case of alleged financial fraud of Rs 22,842 crore on ABG Shipyard. ABG Shipyard is the flagship unit of ABG Group. It gave a consortium of 28 banks and financial institutions Rs. 22,842 crores.
  • This is the biggest bank fraud case ever registered by the CBI. The matter pertains to funds received and misused during the period 2012-17. The then CMD of ABG Shipyard Rishi Agarwal has been named in the FIR.
  • The consortium was led by ICICI Bank. Out of this, ABG Shipyard’s Rs. 7,089 crore to ICICI Bank. 3,639 crore to IDBI Bank. 2,925 crore to State Bank. 1,614 crore to Bank of Baroda, and Rs. 1,244 crore to Punjab National Bank, others.
  • The funds given by these banks were used by the officials of ABG Shipyard for other purposes for which they were given and they were engaged in misappropriation of funds, misappropriation and criminal breach of trust. The same has been disclosed in a report submitted by M/s. Ernst & Young LP.

  1. Paisabazaar & RBL bank tie-up to offer ‘Paisa on Demand’ credit card 
  • Paisabazaar.com, a digital platform for consumer credit, has partnered with RBL Bank Ltd. to offer ‘Paisa on Demand’ (POD), a credit card that will be available exclusively on the Paisabazaar platform.
  • Manufacture products that provide integrated services for large underserved areas across India. This is the third product under Paisabazaar’s neo-debt strategy.
  • RBL Bank credit card will be free of cost for life with digital onboarding process. It offers customers the option of availing a personal loan from RBL Bank, using the same credit limit at normal personal loan rates.
