  1. USOF partners BSNL for high speed internet access to North Eastern States
  • Universal Service Obligation Fund (USOF) has signed an agreement with Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) to provide high quality and high speed internet facility to the states of North Eastern region of India.
  • The agreement calls upon Bangladesh Submarine Cable Company Limited (BSCCL) to lease 10 Gbps international bandwidth for internet connectivity to Agartala.
  • USOF will provide financial assistance to BSNL for a period of three years.
  • The Universal Service Obligation Fund (USOF) comes under Department of Telecommunications (DoT), Ministry of Communications.
  1. Piyush Goyal chairs 5th meeting of BRICS Industry Ministers
  1. Sports Minister Anurag Singh Thakur confers National Youth Awards for 2017-18 and 2018-19 to 22 awardees 
  • The Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Shri Anurag Singh Thakur presented the National Youth Awards for the year 2017-18 and 2018-19 on August 12, 2021 on the occasion of the International Youth Day 2021.
  • A total of 22 National Youth awards (NYA) were given in individual and organisations categories.
  • The NYA 2017-18, was conferred upon 14 awardees which included 10 awards in individual category and 4 awards in Organization category.
  • Similarly, 8 awards were given for NYA 2018-19 with 7 awards in individual category and 1 award in Organization category.
  • The award comprises of a medal, a certificate and a cash prize of Rs 1,00,000/- to individual and a cash prize of Rs. 3,00,000/- to organization respectively.

  1. Indian Navy Conducts Bilateral Maritime Exercise with Vietnam People’s Navy
  • The Indian Navy and the Vietnam People’s Navy (VPN) conducted bilateral maritime exercises in the South China Sea on August 18, 2021 to strengthen the defense ties between the two navies.
  • From India, INS Rannvijay and INS Kora participated in the exercise and from Vietnam People’s Navy (VPN), the frigate VPNS Lai Thai Tu (HQ-012) participated in the drill.

  1. World Photography Day: 19 August
  • The World Photography Day is celebrated on 19 August every year to promote photography as a hobby and also inspire photographers around the globe to share a single photo with the rest of the world.
  • The first official World Photo Day was observed on August 19, 2010.
  • The origin of World Photo Day comes from the invention of the Daguerreotype, a photographic process developed by Frenchmen Louis Daguerre and Joseph Nicephore Niepce in 1837.
  • It was on August 19, 1939 that the French government purchased the patent of Daguerreotype process and announced the invention as a gift “free to the world”.
  1. World Humanitarian Day: 19th August
  • The World Humanitarian Day (WHD) is observed every year on 19 August to pay tribute to humanitarian personnel and those workers who lost or risked their lives while doing humanitarian service.
  • The theme for 2021 WHD is #TheHumanRace: a global challenge for climate action in solidarity with people who need it the most.
  • In 2021 we are celebrating the 12th WHD.
  • World Humanitarian Day was commemorated for the first time on 19 August 2009, after it was formally recognised by the United Nations General Assembly in 2009.
