  1. Pradhan Mantri Jan-Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) completes seven years of successful implementation
  • Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY)-National Mission for Financial Inclusion is celebrating its 7th anniversary on August 28, 2021.
  • PMJDY was announced by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi on 15th August 2014 and was officially launched on 28th August.
  • As on August 18, 2021, the total number of PMJDY accounts opened is 43.04 crore, of which 36.86 crore (85.6%) are operational.
  • From this 55.47% (23.87 crore) Jan-Dhan account holders are women and 66.69% (28.70 crore) Jan Dhan accounts are in rural and semi-urban areas.

  • Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has officially recognized NBF’s Professional News Broadcasters Standards Authority (‘PNBSA’).
  • Professional News Broadcasters Standards Authority (‘PNBSA’) is a self-regulatory body of the News Broadcasters Federation (NBF) for news media. Now it has been officially recognized by the government.
  • News Broadcasters Federation (NBF) is the largest association of news broadcasters across India representing combined interests and perspectives on the crucial matters related to the news broadcasting industry.
  • Arnab Goswami is the current president of the News Broadcasters Federation (NBF).
  1. Meity Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar launches India’s first Quantum Computer Simulator (QSim) toolkit
  • Union Minister of Electronics and Information Technology (Meity) Rajiv Chandrashekhar launched India’s first indigenously developed Quantum Computer Simulator (QSim) toolkit on August 27, 2021.
  • The first of its kind QSim toolkit has been jointly developed by IISc (Indian Institute of Science) Bangalore, IIT (Indian Institute of Technology) Roorkee and C-DAC (Center for Development of Advanced Computing).
  • The important tool will enable learning and understanding of practical aspects of quantum computing in a cost-effective manner.
  1. Rajnath Singh names Army Sports Institute, Pune as “Neeraj Chopra Stadium”
  • The Defense Minister, Shri Rajnath Singh visited the Army Sports Institute (ASI), Pune and renamed the Army Sports Institute Stadium as “Neeraj Chopra Stadium”.
  • The focus of the Indian Army (in the field of sports) is to identify and train promising sportspersons in 11 disciplines.
  • The Indian Army’s “Mission Olympics” program was started in 2001 with the intention of giving medal winning performances at the Olympics and other international events.

Defence News

  1. Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh Commissions Indigeneously built ICGS ‘Vigraha’
  • Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh dedicated to the nation, the indigenously built Coast Guard Ship ‘Vigraha’ on August 28, 2021, in Chennai, Tamil Nadu.
  • The ICGS Vigraha, is the seventh and final ship in the series of Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPVs), the agreement for which was signed in 2015.
  • The ship has been designed and built indigenously by Larsen & Toubro Ship Building Limited.
  • It will be based in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh and operate on the eastern seaboard under the Operational and Administrative Control of the Commander, Coast Guard Region (East).
  • With the joining of this ship, the Indian Coast Guard now have 157 Ships and 66 Aircraft in its inventory.
  1. India and Germany conducts joint maritime exercise in Gulf of Aden
  • The Indian Navy and the German Navy conducted a joint exercise in the Gulf of Aden near Yemen on August 26, 2021, in the Indian Ocean phase of the Indo-Pacific Deployment 2021.
  • The Indian Navy was represented by the frigate “Trikand” while the German Navy was represented by the frigate “Bayern”.
  • The exercise included Helicopter (Cross Deck Helo) Landing and Travel, Board, Search and Seizure (VBSS) operations.
  • The joint exercise aimed at enhancing interoperability and exchange of best practices between the navies of the two countries in maritime domain.

Banking News

  1. RBI enhances limit under Indo-Nepal Remittance Facility to Rs 2 lakh
  • The Reserve Bank of India has increased the money transfer limit under the India-Nepal Remittance Facility Scheme from Rs 50,000 per transaction to Rs.2 lakh per transaction.
  • Earlier there was a maximum limit of 12 transactions in a year. Now this limit has also been removed.
  • However, for cash-based transfers under the Indo-Nepal remittance facility, the per transaction limit of Rs 50,000 will still exist with a maximum of 12 transfers in a year.

  1. International Day against Nuclear Tests: 29th August
  • The International Day Against Nuclear Testing has been observed since 2010 on 29 August.
  • The day aims to raise awareness of the effects of nuclear weapon test explosions or any other nuclear explosion and the need for their cessation as one of the means to achieve the goal of a nuclear-weapon free world.
  • It was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on 2 December 2009.
  • The opening ceremony of the International Day Against Nuclear Testing was held in 2010.

  • In India, National Sports Day is celebrated on 29 August every year to mark the birth anniversary of hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand.
  • National Sports Day, also known as National Sports Day, was first celebrated in 2012.

Major Dhyan Chand Singh
