  1. US President nominated former Mastercard CEO Ajay Banga to lead World Bank
  • From Washington, US President Joe Biden has nominated former Mastercard chief executive Ajay Banga to lead the World Bank after its current chief David Malpass announced plans to step down early. Banga’s nomination comes at a time when development lenders are pushing to more effectively address global problems such as environmental issues.
  • The development lender has started accepting candidate nominations in a process that will run till March 29, with the bank saying women candidates will be “strongly” encouraged. The President of the World Bank is usually American, while the leader of the International Monetary Fund is traditionally European.
  1. UN approves resolution for Russia to leave Ukraine after 1 year
  • The UN General Assembly approved a non-binding resolution calling on Russia to end hostilities in Ukraine on the eve of the first anniversary of the invasion, sending a strong message that Moscow’s aggression must end.
  • The 141-7 vote was slightly lower than five previous resolutions approved by the 193-member world body since Russia sent troops and tanks to its smaller neighbor on February 24, 2022.

National News

  1. Center approves extension of tenure of 22nd Law Commission of India till August 2024
  • The Union Cabinet approved the extension of the tenure of the 22nd Law Commission by one and a half years. This commission was given the responsibility of identifying irrelevant laws and recommending their repeal. According to an official statement, a proposal to this effect was approved in a meeting of the Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
  • The Law Commission of India is a non-statutory body, constituted by the Government of India from time to time. The commission was originally constituted in 1955 and is reconstituted from time to time. The tenure of the current 22nd Law Commission of India ends on February 20, 2023.

  • The Churchgate railway station in Mumbai will soon be called ‘Chintamanrao Deshmukh Station’, named after the first governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) CD Deshmukh.

  • HDFC Bank and Lulu Exchange, a UAE-based financial services company, have partnered to strengthen cross-border payments between India and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region. Both parties have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to enable remittances in India through HDFC’s online and mobile banking powered by Lulu Exchange.
  • In a press release, the bank said that they will launch the ‘Remit Now 2 India’ service for instant money transfers from UAE.
  1. Saraswat Bank partners with Tagit to deploy omnichannel banking
  • Saraswat Bank has partnered with Tagit, a Singapore-based digital banking solutions provider, to implement omnichannel digital banking solutions for its retail and corporate customers. Under the association, the bank will use Tagit’s Mobix digital banking platform to enhance customer experience.
  • The Mobix digital banking platform will accelerate the bank’s ability to launch new digital services, allowing the bank to continuously innovate and scale as its customer base grows.
