- UN inks first ‘High Seas Treaty’ in a bid to protect ocean bodies of the world
- The United Nations (UN) signed the first ‘High Sea Treaty’ to protect the world’s ocean bodies, which lie outside national boundaries and make up about two-thirds of the world’s oceans.
- The treaty results from a decade of negotiations on this environmental concern.
- Previous talks failed to conclude because of disagreements over funding and fishing rights.
- The final international agreement on ocean protection was signed 40 years ago in 1982 – the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.
