1. UN inks first ‘High Seas Treaty’ in a bid to protect ocean bodies of the world

• The United Nations (UN) signed the first ‘High Sea Treaty’ to protect the world’s ocean bodies, which lie outside national boundaries and make up about two-thirds of the world’s oceans.
• The treaty results from a decade of negotiations on this environmental concern.
• Previous talks failed to conclude because of disagreements over funding and fishing rights.
• The final international agreement on ocean protection was signed 40 years ago in 1982 – the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.

2. Ashwini Vaishnaw releases ‘Go, Green, Go Organic’ cover for Sikkim

• Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnav and four ministers of Sikkim released a unique cover of the Department of Posts ‘Go Green, Go Organic’ for Sikkim.

5. Delhi International Airport among cleanest in Asia-Pacific, says ACI

• Delhi airport has been ranked among the cleanest airports in Asia-Pacific as a part of the Airports Council International’s (ACI) annual service quality awards.
• DIAL-operated Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) has won the Airport Service Quality (ASQ) Best Airport Award for 2022 in the category of more than 40 million passengers per annum (MPPA).
• The Airport Service Quality Awards are based on a passenger survey conducted to gauge customer satisfaction on the day of travel.

6. BHEL wins CBIP Award 2022 for Best Contribution to Solar Energy

• CBIP Award 2022: Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has been awarded the Central Board of Irrigation and Power (CBIP) Award 2022 for ‘Best Contribution in Solar Energy’.
• The award was received by Dr. Nalin Singhal, CMD, BHEL along with Shri Renuka Gera, Director (IS&P), BHEL. R.K. Singh, Hon’ble Union Minister for Power and New & Renewable Energy, on CBIP Day. The CBIP Awards are given for outstanding contribution to the development of water, power, and renewable energy sectors.

7. Mirabai Chanu won BBC Indian Sportswoman of The Year for 2022

• Tokyo Olympic Games silver-medallist weightlifter Mirabai Chanu has bagged the 2022 ’BBC Indian Sportswoman Of The Year’ award after a public vote.
• The 28-year-old weightlifter from Manipur became the first athlete to win the award twice in a row after bagging it in 2021 as well.
• BBC Indian Sportswoman of the Year Award was launched in 2019 to celebrate sportswomen in India who have made their mark on the world stage.

8. Writer Vinod Kumar Shukla wins the 2023 PEN/Nabokov Lifetime Achievement Award

• The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) in collaboration with the Pharmaceuticals & Medical Devices Bureau of India (PMBI), the implementing agency of Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana (PMBJP), and States and Union Territories are celebrating 5th Jan Aushadhi Diwas 2023 under (PMBJP).

• The world’s first 200-meter-long bamboo crash barrier has been installed on a highway connecting Chandrapur and Yavatmal districts in Maharashtra.
• Named ‘Bahu Balli’, the bamboo crash barrier underwent “rigorous testing” at various government-run institutions like the National Automotive Test Tracks (NATRAX) in Pithampur, Indore.
