  1. Consumer Affairs Department launches Jagriti, its new mascot 
  • Jagriti is a mascot created by the Department of Consumer Affairs (DCA) with the goal of empowering customers and raising awareness about their rights. Jagriti will be shown as an educated consumer advocating for her rights and looking for answers to the problems she faces.
  • Jagriti Shubhankar 2019 will be employed to raise consumer awareness about various departmental subjects including provisions of the Consumer Protection Act, Hallmarking, National Consumer Helpline toll-free number 1915, provisions of Weights and Measures Act, etc. Central Consumer Protection Authority, and Consumer Evidence regarding grievance redressal.
  1. Varanasi named 1st cultural and tourism capital of SCO 
  • Varanasi, the holy city that showcases India’s culture and traditions for centuries, will be declared the SCO’s first “Cultural and Tourism Capital”.
  • Varanasi will become the “Cultural and Tourism Capital” of the SCO for 2022-23 under a new rotating initiative by the eight-member organization to promote people-to-people contact and tourism among member states.
  • The Beijing-headquartered Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) is an eight-member economic and security alliance comprising China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, India, and Pakistan.

  1. Kerala becomes the first state to have its own internet service 
  • Kerala is now the first and only state in the country to have its own internet service, according to Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, who made the announcement.
  • The announcement followed the Department of Telecommunications’ granting of an Internet Service Provider (ISP) license to the IT infrastructure project of the Kerala Fiber Optic Network Ltd (K-Fon), which aims to provide everyone in the state access to the internet.
  • K-Fon or Kerala Fiber Optic Network Ltd is a state government initiative that aims to eliminate the digital gap. As per the government, the infrastructure created by this project is expected to complement the state’s current telecom ecosystem.

  1. Following $100 million in investment, OneCard becomes India’s 104th unicorn
  • OneCard, a mobile-first credit card company, raised $100 million in a Series D round of funding backed by Temasek, making it the 104th Unicorn in India. India has created over 20 financial unicorns so far in 2022, including OneCard, Open, Oxyzo, and Yubi (formerly CredAvenue).
  • Existing investors including QED, Sequoia Capital, and Hummingbird Ventures also invested in the most recent round of OneCard, which is owned by Pune-based FPL Technologies.

  1. Integration with new tax site completed by Kotak Mahindra Bank
  • As one of the first private banks to be fully integrated with the new portal, Kotak Mahindra Bank has announced the completion of its technological integration with the new Income Tax e-filing system.
  • According to a statement from the lender, Kotak Mahindra Bank customers can now pay their direct taxes online through the portal’s e-pay tax page using Kotak Net Banking or in person at a branch. For its customers, it will make the tax payment process quick, easy, and convenient.

  1. Singapore Open 2022: PV Sindhu wins first Super 500 title 
  • PV Sindhu won the first Super 500 title of her career when she defeated reigning Asian champion Wang Zhi Yi of China 21-9, 11-21, 21-15 in the final of the Singapore Open.
  • Anthony Sinisuka Ginting won the men’s singles title at badminton’s Singapore Open 2022. Olympic bronze medallist Ginting from Indonesia beat unseeded Japanese player Naraoka Kodai in a closely fought final.
  1. Indian GM Aravindh Chithambaram won the tournament in Spain 
  • Indian Grandmaster Arvind Chitambaram emerged as the winner at the 41st Vila de Benasque International Chess Open in Spain. Chittagambaram coach RB Ramesh praised his ward for the title.
  • He defeated Armenia’s Robert Hovhannisyan and compatriot Raunak Sadhwani by tie-break scores here. Sadhwani finished third behind the Armenian. Chidambaram is also a former national champion.

  1. Nelson Mandela International Day 2022 observed on 18 July
  • Every year on 18 July the world celebrates Nelson Mandela International Day. The day commemorates South Africa’s first democratically elected president and his long struggle for justice against apartheid.
  • According to the United Nations, the theme of Nelson Mandela International Day 2022 is “do with whatever you have, do it where you are”.

  • Former Punjab President and Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader, Nirmal Singh Kahlon passed away at the age of 79.
  • He was Minister of Rural Development and Panchayats from 1997 to 2002 and Speaker of the Legislative Assembly from 2007 to 2012.

  1. Inauguration of Census Data Workstation at IIT Delhi 
  • A new census workstation has been unveiled by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi in the Economics Lab of the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences. The Census Data Workstation was officially opened by Dr. Vivek Joshi, the Registrar General and Census Commissioner for India.
  • According to Dr. Joshi, the new workstation aims to make it easier for academics and researchers to access census microdata. Additionally, it will contribute to raising awareness of the enormous amount of data that was gathered during Census activities.
