  1. Tamil Nadu’s ‘Kanniyakumari Clove’ gets GI Tag along with 2 more products
  • The unique clove spice grown in the hills of Kanyakumari district in Tamil Nadu has been awarded a geographical indication (GI) as ‘Kanyakumari clove’.
  • In India, the total production of cloves is 1,100 metric tons and of this, 1,000 metric tons is produced in Tamil Nadu every year while 750 metric tons of cloves are produced in Kanyakumari district alone.
  • Apart from this, the traditional dye-painted figurative and patterned cloth called Karuppur kalamkari paintings and the wood carvings of Kallakurichi from Tamil Nadu have also received GI tags.
  1. Bathukamma, the unique festival of flowers begins in Telangana

  • The famous Bathukamma flower festival celebrations have begun in Telangana state and parts of Andhra Pradesh.
  • The nine-day festival begins on the day of Mahalaya Amavasya (also known as Pitru Amavasya) and ends on Durgashtami which is two days before Dussehra.
  • Goddess Maha Gauri – the ‘giver of life’ is worshiped in the form of Bathukamma.
  • To mark the festival, a plethora of beautiful flowers with various unique seasonal flowers are made in seven concentric layers in the shape of a temple gopuram.
  1. PM Narendra Modi launches Indian Space Association (ISpA)

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the Indian Space Association (ISpA) on October 11, 2021 via videoconferencing.
  • The ISpA is a private industry body which will act as a premier industry body for space and satellite companies in the country.
  • ISpA will be represented by homegrown and global corporations with advanced capabilities in space and satellite technologies.
  • ISpA will work towards boosting space technology in India, with focus on capacity building and space economic hubs and incubators in India.

  • Vice-President – Rahul Vatts, Bharti Airtel’s chief regulatory officer

  1. Astronautical Society of India Confers 2021 Aryabhata Award to Dr G Satheesh Reddy
  • Dr G Satheesh Reddy, Secretary DDR&D and Chairman DRDO, has been conferred with the prestigious Aryabhata Award for 2021 by the Astronautical Society of India (ASI) on October 09, 2021.
  • Dr G Satheesh Reddy has been awarded for his outstanding life-time contribution in promoting astronautics in India.
  • The Aryabhata Award is presented annually by the Astronautical Society of India (ASI) to individuals with remarkable lifelong contributions to astronautics and aerospace technology in India.
  • The award consists of a citation and Rs. 1,00,000 in cash.
  1. Telugu filmmaker B Gopal selected for Satyajit Ray Award

  • Noted Telugu filmmaker Bezwada Gopal has been named as the winner of the fourth Satyajit Ray Award for his overall contribution to Indian cinema.
  • The award is presented by the Satyajit Ray Film Society, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala.
  • The Satyajit Ray Award consists of a cash prize of Rs 10,000, a memento and plaque.
  1. USA economists David Card, Joshua Angrist and Guido Imbens Wins 2021 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences
  • The 2021 Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences has been awarded in two parts, the first half has been awarded to David Card “for his empirical contributions to labour economics”
  • The second half has been awarded jointly to Joshua D. Angrist and Guido W. Imbens “for their methodological contributions to the analysis of causal relationships.”
  • The award is officially known as the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel 2021.
  • The laureates in economic sciences are selected by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in Stockholm.
  • It comes with a gold medal and a cash award of 10 million Swedish krona ($1.12 million).

  1. World Arthritis Day: 12 October
  • World Arthritis Day is observed every year on 12 October to raise awareness about arthritis, an inflammatory condition that causes pain and stiffness in the joints that can worsen with age.
  • The day was initiated by Arthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis International (ARI) in 1996 to spread awareness about arthritis and encourage policy makers to help reduce the burden of arthritis.
  • The theme of World Arthritis Day 2021 is Don’t delay, Join today: Time2Work.
  • Arthritis means inflammation of the joints which leads to pain and stiffness in the joints.

  1. National Award winning actor Nedumudi Venu passes away
  • National Award winning actor Nedumudi Venu has passed away. He won three National Film Awards and six Kerala State Film Awards for his performance.
  • Nedumudi Venu started his career as a theater artist with plays by Kavalam Narayana Panicker. He made his debut in films in 1978 with Thambu directed by G Aravindan. Known for his work in Malayalam and Tamil films, Venu acted in over 500 films.
