National News

  1. Construction of 1,07,000 lakh houses approved in five states under PMAY(U)
  • The Ministry of Urban Housing and Urban Affairs has approved the construction of one lakh seven thousand houses in five states under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban).
  • These states are Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Puducherry and Uttarakhand. This approval was given in the 57th meeting of the Central Sanctioning and Monitoring Committee held in New Delhi.
  • Presiding over the meeting, Durgashankar Mishra, Secretary, Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, discussed the issues related to grounding and construction of houses in the States and Union Territories.
  • He directed the State and Union Territory officials to expedite the construction of houses in their respective areas. He said that grounding should be the first responsibility, after that the focus should be on making the houses 100 percent.
  • The total number of houses sanctioned under the mission is now one crore 14 lakh. Out of which around 91 lakh are on land for construction and more than 53 lakh have been completed and distributed to the beneficiaries. The total investment under the mission is more than Rs.7 lakh 52 thousand crore.
  1. Jal Jeevan Mission: Drinking water supply schemes to benefit 140 villages in Uttarakhand
  • Under the Jal Jeevan Mission in Uttarakhand, drinking water supply schemes worth more than Rs 164 crore have been approved.
  • It will provide tap water connection to more than nine thousand 200 rural households. According to the Ministry of Jal Shakti, 140 villages of Almora, Bageshwar, Dehradun, Nainital and Uttarkashi districts will benefit from these schemes.
  • In the current financial year, the state has planned to provide tap water connections to two lakh 64 thousand houses. The state government aims to provide clean tap water to all rural households by December next year.
  • The Jal Jeevan Mission was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on August 15, 2019, which aims to ensure supply of tap water to every rural household by 2024.

International News

  1. US President Joe Biden bans import of goods from China’s Xinjiang province to prevent use of forced labour
  • US President Joe Biden last night signed the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act that bans import of goods into the US made with forced labour in China’s Xinjiang province.
  • White House said, US President signed into law, which bans imports from the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of the People’s Republic of China and imposes sanctions on foreign individuals responsible for forced labour in the region. Earlier this month, the US Senate and the House of Representatives passed the bill with overwhelming support.
  • The legislation targets goods, wares, articles, and merchandise imported directly from Xinjiang or made by Uyghurs, Kazakhs, Kyrgyz, Tibetans, or members of other persecuted groups in China.
  • The US actions come in the backdrop of a growing campaign to boycott Beijing Winter Olympics 2022.
  1. India, EIB sign contract for first tranche loan of Euro 250 million for Agra Metro Rail Project

  • The government and the European Investment Bank signed a finance contract for the first tranche loan of 250 million euros for the Agra Metro Rail Project.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi had inaugurated the construction work of the Agra Metro project in Agra last year via video conference.
  • The European Investment Bank had approved a total loan of 450 million euros for the Agra Metro Rail Project.
  • The project aims to provide safe, reliable, affordable and environment friendly public Mass Rapid Transit System for Agra city. It will improve mobility and support endeavour for planned urban development in Agra.
  • The financing from EIB will help to fund construction of 29.4 km metro corridor. The project will also enhance economic productivity of the city and catalyse job creation.

  1. FIS Alpine Skiing Competition: Ace Indian skier Aanchal Thakur wins Bronze medal in Montenegro
  • Ace Indian skier Aanchal Thakur has won a bronze medal in the FIS Alpine skiing competition in Montenegro.
  • She finished third with a total time of 1:54:30. Silver medalist Georgia Epiphaniu was just two seconds ahead of Aanchal.
  • With this, Aanchal has become the first Indian ski athlete to win two medals at the international level.
  • She has previously won a bronze medal in the FIS Alpine Skiing Competition.

  1. National Consumer Rights Day
  • National Consumer Rights Day is celebrated every year on 24th December. On this day in 1986, the Consumer Protection Act 1986 got the assent of the President and thus came into force. The act aims to provide consumers with effective safeguards against various forms of exploitation, such as defective goods, deficiency in services and unfair trade practices.
  • The day provides an opportunity to highlight to the people the importance of consumer rights movement and the need to make every consumer more aware of their rights and responsibilities.
  • ‘Jago Grahak Jago’, meaning ‘conscious consumer’, is a consumer awareness program launched by the Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • As part of this initiative, the government has used channels to create consumer awareness through print, media advertisements, audio campaigns and video campaigns for consumer information and education.
