  1.  UNESCO grants World Heritage Status to Madrid’s Paseo del Prado and Retiro Park
  • Madrid’s historic Paseo del Prado boulevard and Retiro Park in Spain have been designated UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
  • The Paseo del Prado, surrounded by trees in the heart of Spain’s capital, is home to prominent buildings such as the Prado Museum.
  • The iconic Retiro Park, adjacent to the Paseo del Prado, covers 125 hectares of green space, and is one of the most visited attractions in Madrid’s history.
  1. Philippines becomes the first country to approve Golden Rice for planting
  • The Philippines has become the first country in the world to receive approval for commercial production of genetically modified “golden rice,” a nutrient-rich rice variety to help reduce childhood malnutrition.
  • Golden rice has been developed after spending nearly two decades by the Department of Agriculture-Philippine Rice Research Institute (DA-Philice) in partnership with the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI).
  • Due to its bright yellow color, it is named Golden Rice.
  • One cup of golden rice can provide up to 40 percent of the vitamin A needed for children aged six months to five years, fighting childhood blindness and saving lives in developing countries.
  • It is also the first genetically modified rice approved for commercial distribution in South and Southeast Asia.

  1. Amit Shah inaugurates Greater Sohra Water Supply Scheme
  • Union Home Minister, Amit Shah along with Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma inaugurated the much awaited Greater Sohra Water Supply Scheme at Sohra in East Khasi Hills of Meghalaya.
  • The Greater Sohra Water Supply Scheme was conceived by the Government of Meghalaya and Rs. Under the Northeast Special Infrastructure Development Scheme (NESIDS), Rs.24.08 crore was sanctioned by the donor ministry in 2019.
  • He also planted saplings in Sohra under the Sohra Afforestation Project of the Assam Rifles.
  • This is a first of its kind initiative of the Government of Meghalaya to bring together the Ministry of Home Affairs, Defence officials, and village communities for a novel and humanitarian purpose in the field of Natural Resource Management in a very important and ecologically fragile landscape.

  1. BS Yediyurappa Resigns as Chief Minister of Karnataka
  • Karnataka Chief Minister, BS Yediyurappa has announced his resignation from the top post on July 26, 2021, when his government completed two years in the state, after being elected to power in 2019.
  • The 78-year-old Yediyurappa, often called by his initials BSY, served as the 19th Chief Minister of Karnataka. He had served as the chief minister of Karnataka for four terms and was the only chief minister to do so in Karnataka history.

  1. Care Ratings Projects India’s GDP growth between 8.8-9% in FY22
  • The CARE rating agency has projected India’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth rate to range between 8.8 and 9 per cent in the current fiscal, that is, 2021-22 (FY22).
  • In the financial year 2020-21, the country’s economy had declined by 7.3 percent. The report also said that the fiscal deficit for FY22 is estimated to be between Rs 17.38 lakh crore and Rs 17.68 lakh crore. The main drivers of the economy will be agriculture and industry sectors.

  1. International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem
  • The International Day for the Conservation of Mangrove Ecosystems (or World Mangrove Day) is observed annually on 26 July.
  • The day is observed to raise awareness about the importance of mangrove ecosystems as “a unique, special and vulnerable ecosystem” and to promote solutions for their sustainable management, conservation and use.
  • The day was adopted by the General Conference of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 2015.
  • It was on this day in 1998, that a Greenpeace activist Hayhow Daniel Nanoto, died of a heart attack during a massive protest to re-establish the mangrove wetlands in Muisne, Ecuador.

  • The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) celebrated its 83rd Raising Day on 27 July 2021. CRPF is India’s largest Central Armed Police Force under the authority of Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).
  • Its headquarter is located in New Delhi. It came into existence on 27 July 1939 as the Crown Representative’s Police.
  • After Indian independence, it became the Central Reserve Police Force on the enactment of the CRPF Act on 28 December 1949.

  1. Veteran multilingual actress Jayanthi passes away
  • Renowned southern actor Jayanti has passed away due to age related ailments. He started his acting career in 1963 and has acted in more than 500 films spanning five languages ​​including Kannada, Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam and Hindi.
  • She was affectionately known as ‘Abhinaya Sharade’ i.e. ‘Goddess of Acting’ in the Kannada film industry. He won several awards including Karnataka State Film Award seven times and Filmfare Award twice.
