  1. Canada approved world’s 1st plant-derived COVID-19 vaccine
  • Canada has become the first country in the world to authorize the use of a plant-based COVID-19 vaccine. Medicago Inc.   • The decision to authorize the vaccine was based on a study conducted on 24,000 adults that showed the vaccine had an efficacy rate of 71% in preventing COVID-19 – although the trials were done before the Omron version emerged.
  • The name given to this vaccine is Covifenz. Canada agreed to purchase 20 million doses of this plant-based vaccine, with the option to purchase an additional 56 million doses.
  1. New Development Bank 1st multilateral agency to open office in Gift City

  • New Development Bank (NDB) will become the first multilateral agency to open an office in Gujarat International Finance Tec City (GIFT). The New Development Bank (NDB) has got the approval for this and will open an office in GIFT City in May 2022.
  • The Indian office will help identify suitable projects and try to create a pipeline of potential financing for the bank. NDB also expects to partner with the newly launched National Bank for Financing Infrastructure and Development (NBFID) to support critical infrastructure projects in India.
  • The NDB was established by the BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) in 2014 with the objective of mobilizing resources for infrastructure and sustainable development projects in BRICS as well as other emerging markets. It became operational in 2015. And its headquarter is in Shanghai, China. All the founding members equally own the bank.

National News

  1. GoI launches mission named Operation Ganga to evacuate nationals from Ukraine
  • The Indian government has launched an evacuation mission called Operation Ganga to evacuate Indian citizens from Ukraine due to Russia-Ukraine tensions.
  • Due to the ongoing tension between Ukraine and Russia, Ukraine has been declared a no-fly zone by the authorities for the safety and security of the nations. This left many Indian nationals stranded in Ukraine.
  • To help Indian citizens return to the country, the Indian government decided to conduct a special evacuation mission called Operation Ganga. The government will bring back Indian citizens by flight.
  1. Cochin Airport to become power-positive with new solar plant
  • Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) is set to commission a 12 MW solar power plant on March 6 near Payyannur in Kannur district of Kerala. With the commissioning of the new solar power plant, CIAL will get the status of a power-positive airport from its present status of being a power-neutral airport.
  • In 2015, CIAL became the first airport in the world to be powered entirely by solar power. The power plant boasts of 12 MW capacity on 35 acres of land where CIAL introduced the concept of terrain-based installation where the geographical features of the area are retained and there is no change in the slope of the land.

  1. Singapore Weightlifting International 2022: India secures 8 medals
  • India finished its campaign at the Singapore Weightlifting International 2022 with eight medals, including six gold and one silver and bronze.

  • In tennis, Rafael Nadal (Spain) defeated British number one Cameron Norie 6-4 6-4 to win the singles title of the Mexican Open 2022 (also known as the Acapulco title). This is the 91st ATP title of his career and third title of the season.
  • This is the fourth time Rafael Nadal has won the Mexican Open title, after winning previous titles in 2005, 2013 and 2020. The men’s doubles title winners are Feliciano López (Spain) and Stefanos Tsitsipas (Greece).

  1. Rare Disease Day observed on 28 February 2022
  • The Rare Disease Day (RDD) is observed every year on the last day of February. This year in 2022 it falls on February 28, 2022. The day is observed to raise awareness for rare diseases and improve access to treatment and medical representation for individuals with rare diseases and their families.
  • Rare Disease Day was first launched by European Organisation for Rare Diseases (EURORDIS) and its Council of National Alliances in 2008.

  1. Delhi Cabinet approved India’s first’ e-waste eco-park
  • The Delhi Cabinet has approved setting up India’s first of its kind electronic-waste eco-park. It has also agreed to devise ‘Delhi Film Policy 2022’, as a thrust to promote tourism. The electronic waste eco-friendly park is to be built on 20 acres of land in Delhi.
  • Nearly, 2 lakh tonnes of e-waste are thrown by Delhi every year. This eco-park will recycle, refurbish and dismantle e-waste in a scientific and safe way.
  • This eco-park will act as an Integrated Facility, by engaging in dismantling, segregating, refurbishing, material-wise storage, testing and plastic recycling. It will also have precious metal extraction facilities, especially from Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs) through high-end technologies.
  • The Delhi Film Policy 2022 is to promote tourism in Delhi, making the National Capital- a Brand. It will also make it a hub for modern film-making, meeting European Standards.
  • The government is to create an ‘eFilm Clearance Portal’ and provide aid of Rs 3 crores for film production. It has also decided to incentivize hiring locals in the cinema industry.
