  1. Government launches YUVA – Prime Minister’s Scheme For Mentoring Young Authors
  • The Department of Higher Education under the Ministry of Education has launched a new initiative called ‘Yuva – Pradhan Mantri Yojana to advise young writers’.
  • YUVA stands for Young, Upcoming and Versatile Writers.
  • It is an Author Mentorship programme to train young and budding authors, below 30 years of age to promote reading, writing and book culture in the country, and project India and Indian writings globally.
  • The National Book Trust, India under the Ministry of Education will be the implementing agency for the scheme.
  • The young winning authors will be trained by eminent authors/mentors.
  • Under the mentorship scheme, an unbroken scholarship of Rs.50,000 per month will be paid for a period of six months per author.
  1. India to launch mobile tech platform ‘UNITE AWARE’ for UN peacekeepers in August 2021
  • India is developing a mobile technology platform called ‘Unite Aware’ to use technology in the safety and security of UN peacekeepers.
  • India is working on this project in collaboration with the United Nations Department of Peacekeeping Operations and the Operations Support Department.
  • India is contributing $1.64 million towards the project.
  • Unite Aware will go a long way in raising situational awareness and providing information related to the area to peacekeepers, as field-centric, reliable and cost-effective new technologies have become the need of the hour in peacekeeping operations, from the practical needs of end users.   • The project UNITE AWARE will be launched in August 2021 when India will be the assuming the Presidency of the 15-nation UN Security Council.
  1. Government announces measures to help families who lost the earning member due to Covid-19
  • The Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Government of India has announced two major measures for those families who have lost the earning member due to Covid-19, to mitigate financial difficulties that may be faced by them.
  • Firstly, the government has decided to provide family pension to such families and secondly, provide them with an enhanced and generous insurance compensation.

Key Facts related to the schemes

  1. Family Pension under Employees State Insurance Corporation (ESIC)
  • Dependent family members of such persons will be entitled to get the benefit of pension equivalent to 90% of average daily wage drawn by the worker as per the existing norms.
  • This benefit will be applicable from 24 March 2020 to 24 March 2022.
  1. Employees Provident Fund Organization- Employees’ Deposit Linked Insurance Scheme (EDLI)
  • The insurance benefits under the EDLI scheme have been enhanced and liberalized, particularly to help the families of employees who have lost their lives due to COVID.
  • The maximum sum insured benefit has been increased from Rs.6 lakh to Rs.7 lakhs
  • The provision of minimum insurance benefit has been retained at Rs2.5 lakh.
  • This benefit will apply retrospectively from 15 February 2020 for the next three years, that is 15 February 2022.

Banking News

  1. RBI imposes Rs10 crore penalty on HDFC Bank for violation of provisions under various sections of Banking Regulation Act
  • The Reserve Bank of India has imposed a penalty of Rs10 crore on HDFC Bank for deficiencies in regulatory compliance found in the bank’s auto loan portfolio.
  • According to RBI, HDFC Bank has violated the provisions of Section 6 (2) and Section 8 of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949.
  • After receiving a complaint from a whistle blower, RBI conducted a examination in the marketing and sale of third-party non-financial products to the bank’s auto loan customers and found that the bank was in contravention of regulatory directions.
  • RBI has imposed monetary penalty in exercise of powers vested by the central bank under the provisions of section 47A(1)(c) read with section 46(4)(i) of the Banking Regulation Act.

Awards News

  1. Indian peacekeepers honoured posthumously with UN medal for sacrifice in line of duty
  • Three Indian peacekeepers, who laid down their lives while serving in United Nations (UN) peacekeeping missions in 2020, have been posthumously awarded the prestigious United Nations Medal for Courage and Sacrifice in the Line of Duty .
  • These three peacekeepers are among 129 military, police and civilian personnel selected for the honor from all over the world.
  • The three peacekeepers from India who have been honoured posthumously with the Dag Hammarskjold Medal are Corporal Yuvraj Singh, who served with the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), and two civilian peacekeepers, Ivan Michael Picardo (who served with UNMISS), and Mulchand Yadav (who worked for the UN Assistance Mission in Iraq (UNAMI)).

  1. Government Extends Tenures of RAW Chief Samant Kumar Goel and IB Chief Arvind Kumar by One Year till June 2022
  • The government has extended the tenure of Intelligence Bureau (IB) Director Arvind Kumar and Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) chief Samant Kumar Goyal for a year.
  • Now the two-year fixed term of the two officers, which was to end on June 30, 2021, has been extended to June 30, 2022.
  • Kumar is a 1984 batch IPS officer from Assam-Meghalaya cadre.
  • Goel is a 1984 batch IPS officer from Punjab-cadre.
