  • NATO leaders have declared that China continues to pose a security challenge and is working to undermine the global order.
  • It is a message in line with US President Joe Biden’s efforts to speak to allies with a more unified voice against China’s trade, military and human rights practices.
  • The NATO leaders said that China’s goals and ‘assertive behaviour present systemic challenges to the rules-based international order and to areas relevant to alliance security.
  • The warning to China comes as Biden has stepped up his effort to rally allies to put up a unified voice about China’s human rights record. Biden has also criticized China’s trade practices and its military’s increasingly assertive behaviour that has unnerved US allies in the Pacific.

  1. Raja Parba- Odisha’s Famous Festival celebrated
  • Raja Parba festival is celebrated in Odisha. It is a unique 3 days festival in which the state celebrates the onset of monsoon and the femininity of the earth. It is believed that the Mother Earth or Bhudevi gets menstruation during this period.

  • Wholesale price-based inflation rose to a record high of 12.94 per cent in May on rising crude oil and manufactured goods prices. The lower base effect also contributed to the increase in WPI inflation in May 2021.
  • In May 2020, WPI inflation was at (-) 3.37 per cent. In April 2021, WPI inflation hit double-digit at 10.49 per cent.
  • The annual rate of inflation, based on monthly WPI, was 12.94 per cent for the month of May 2021 (over May 2020) as compared to (-) 3.37 per cent in May 2020.
  • The Office of Economic Adviser, Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade is releasing index numbers of Wholesale Price in India (Base Year: 2011-12) for the month of May 2021 (Provisional).

  1. RBI allows prepaid mobile recharges through Bharat Bill Payment System
  • According to RBI, the scope of Bharat Bill Payment System (BBPS) will be expanded by adding ‘Mobile prepaid recharge as biller category’ till August 31 this year.
  • BBPS is an interoperable platform for recurring bill payments operated by the National Payments Corporation of India.
  • In May, 213.59 million bill payment transactions were carried out through the BBPS channel. BBPS was started in 2014 as a platform for repetitive bill payments.
