Cabinet approves Deep Ocean Mission of Ministry of Earth Sciences

The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved the implementation of “Deep Ocean Mission”.
This mission is proposed by the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), to explore the deep ocean for resources and develop deep-sea technologies for sustainable use of ocean resources.
The 5-year mission will be implemented at an estimated cost of Rs. 4077 crore in a phased manner.
The first phase will be carried during 2021-2024, at an estimated cost of Rs. 2823.4 crore.
The objective of the Deep Ocean Mission is to support the Blue Economy Initiatives of the Government of India.
The Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) will be the nodal ministry to implement this ambitious multi-institutional mission.

Telangana AI Mission launched ‘Revv Up”

The Telangana government has launched the NASSCOM-run Telangana AI Mission (T-AIM) and as part of T-AIM, an accelerator program called “Rave Up” to enable and empower AI startups.
The program, which launched its first cluster in July, is another step towards making Telangana and Hyderabad a global destination for AI and other emerging technologies.
The accelerator programme, exclusively designed for growth-stage AI startups, will cover various sectors.
Telangana Industries and IT principal secretary Jayesh Ranjan stated, “Telangana is committed to its vision of positioning the State as the leader in AI.
After becoming the first state in India to launch an actionable policy framework for Artificial Intelligence in June 2020, the first version of the Rev Up Accelerator program has been rolled out to improve innovative AI ideas under T-AIM.

Policybazaar gets insurance broking licence

Policy bazaar has received approval from regulator IRDAI to start insurance broking, a development that will help the company grow business and expand its bouquet of services.
With this development, the company will hand over its web aggregator license to the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) and do business including insurance aggregation under the broking umbrella.
The broking licence will allow the company to venture into segments which it could not do in the past like claims assistance, offline services, and establish Points of Presence network. Policy bazaar has a market share of 25 per cent in the life insurance segment while 10 per cent in health insurance.

Defence Minister Approves Budgetary Support of Rs 499 cr for innovations

Defense Minister Rajnath Singh has approved budgetary support of Rs 498.8 crore for iDEX-DIO (Innovation for Defense Excellence – Defense Innovation Organisation) for the next five years.
The funds will be used to provide financial assistance to around 300 start-ups, micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and individual innovators with the larger goal of ensuring self-reliance in the defense sector.
The scheme is in sync with the government’s push to cut imports of military hardware and weapons and make India a hub for defence manufacturing.

SIPRI Yearbook 2021: China, India, Pakistan expanding nuclear arsenal

Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) has released the SIPRI Yearbook 2021. The report assesses the current state of arms, disarmament and international security.
China is in the midst of significant modernization and expansion of its nuclear weapons list, and India and Pakistan are also expanding their nuclear arsenals.
According to the yearbook, India possessed an estimated 156 nuclear warheads at the start of 2021 compared to 150 at the start of last year, while Pakistan had 165 warheads, up from 160 in 2020.
China’s nuclear arsenal consisted of 350 warheads up from 320 at the start of 2020.
The nine nuclear-armed states – the U.S., Russia, the U.K., France, China, India, Pakistan, Israel and North Korea – together possessed an estimated 13,080 nuclear weapons at the start of 2021.
Russia and the U.S. together possessed over 90% of global nuclear weapons and have extensive and expensive modernisation programmes underway.
