  1. Sri Lanka: Ranil Wickremesinghe elected as 9th President 
  • Veteran Sri Lankan politician and six-time Prime Minister, Ranil Wickremesinghe have been elected by the Parliament as the 9th President of the island nation. He secured 134 votes in the presidential election by the 225-member parliament.
  • Wickremesinghe, 73, will serve the remainder of former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s term, which ends in 2024.
  1. Due to an intense heat wave, England is under its first-ever red weather warning 
  • As temperatures have continued to soar, the UK Meteorological (Met) Office issued the first-ever red extreme heat warning for areas of England, including London.
  • Temperatures could reach 40 degrees Celsius, and a red warning, the maximum level used by the Met Office under its alert system, indicates a risk to life is possible. The unusual warning, which is categorized as a national emergency, signifies that life is in danger for people of all ages.
  • According to the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), a heatwave reaches level four when it is so intense and/or persistent that its consequences go beyond the reach of the health and social care system. This implies that everyone, not just high-risk groups, including healthy, fit people, could be vulnerable to illness and death.

National News

  1. 15th President of India: Draupadi Murmu
  • Draupadi Murmu, the daughter of a tribal family coming from a very simple home in Odisha, has been elected as the 15th President of India.
  • The 2022 Indian presidential election was the 16th presidential election that took place in India on 18 July 2022. Murmu became the first woman tribal president of India.
  • She is also the second woman after Pratibha Patil to hold the position. The term of current President Ram Nath Kovind ends on July 24.
  1. PM Narendra Modi unveils ‘SPRINT Challenges’ to boost usage of Indigenous Technology 
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled ‘SPRINT Challenges’, aimed at giving a boost to the usage of indigenous technology in the Indian Navy, during the Naval Innovation and Indigenisation Organisation (NIIO) seminar ‘Swavlamban’ in New Delhi.
  • This collaborative project is named SPRINT {Supporting Pole-Vaulting in R&D through Innovations for Defence Excellence (iDEX), NIIO, and Technology Development Acceleration Cell (TDAC)}.

Banking News

  1. IndusInd Bank board approves raising Rs 20,000 crore through debt 
  • The board of private lender IndusInd Bank has authorized plans to raise Rs 20,000 crore in debt for the company’s expansion. According to a statement by IndusInd Bank, the board of directors of the bank in a meeting approved the proposal.
  • The Board has been authorized to issue debt securities in any permitted manner through private placement, subject to the condition that the aggregate amount does not exceed Rs.20,000 crore. As required, it can also be raised in foreign currencies with the consent of the members of the Bank and after obtaining any additional government or regulatory permission.
  1. Govt and RBI policies aid banks to recover bad loans of Rs. 8.6 lakh crore in 8 fiscal years
  • The administration informed Parliament that concrete actions were taken by the RBI and government-assisted banks in recovering bad loans of more than Rs 8.6 lakh crore over the course of the previous eight fiscal years.
  • Non-performing assets (NPAs) are a natural, albeit unfavorable, corollary of the banking industry, according to Minister of State for Finance Bhagwat Karad in a written response to the Lok Sabha.
  • The government of India and the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) regularly issue directives and have implemented a number of initiatives aimed at resolving long-standing stressed assets on banks’ books as well as timely identification and recognition of stress immediately upon default and take corrective action for mitigating the same.

  1. Digit Insurance launched ‘pay as you drive’ for motor insurance 
  • Go Digit General Insurance is the first insurer to offer the ‘Pay As You Drive’ (PAYD) add-on feature for Motor Insurance On Damage (OD) policies.
  • Insurance has launched an add-on feature for motor insurance on damage policies called Pay as you drive. Vehicle owners can purchase this benefit as part of comprehensive coverage with Motor Own Damage (OD) policies.
  1. L&T Tech: First company to directly obtain and implement 5G spectrum 
  • L&T Technology Services is the first IT company to publicly show interest in the government’s direct delivery of exclusive 5G networks.
  • According to CEO Amit Chadha, it will acquire spectrum to set up 5G private networks and develop use cases for the technology.
  • In addition, the engineering and research and development services company will offer 5G solutions to parent company Larsen & Toubro globally.

  1. NAARM received the Sardar Patel Award of ICAR 
  • The National Academy of Agricultural Research Management (NAARM) has received the Sardar Patel Outstanding ICAR Institute Award 2021 (in the Large Institution Category) for its overall performance.
  • NAARM Director Srinivasa Rao received the award from Narendra Singh Tomar, Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare in New Delhi. The awards were presented at a function organized on the occasion of the 94th Foundation Day of ICAR.

  1. Los Angeles to host 2028 Summer Olympic Games 
  • The 2028 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games will be hosted in Los Angeles, United States. The opening ceremony of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics will take place on July 14, 2028, and will last until July 30.
  • However, Los Angeles previously hosted the Olympics in 1984 and 1932. The LA28 Games will feature over 3,000 hours of live play in over 3,000 events in over 40 sports. According to LA28, 15,000 athletes are expected to participate in the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Los Angeles.
  1. Bangladeshi Cricketer Tamim Iqbal Announces Retirement From T20Is
  • Bangladesh ODI captain, Tamim Iqbal has announced his retirement from T20Is and his decision came soon after they beat West Indies 3-0 in the three-match ODI series. He played his last T20 International match in March 2020.
  • The 33-year-old has played 78 T20 Internationals, scoring 1758 runs at 24.08. Tamim is one of the best openers to come out of Bangladesh, scoring 5082 runs in Tests and 7943 runs in ODIs.

  • The General Assembly declared 20 July as the International Day of the Moon, designated by the United Nations, to be observed annually.

  • World Chess Day is celebrated globally on 20 July every year. The day marks the date of the founding of the International Chess Federation (FIDE) in Paris in 1924. On this day, we can observe the day by teaching someone or learning to play a game.

  1. Renowned artist Achuthan Kudallur passes away 
  • Eminent artist Achuthan Kudallur passed away recently at the age of 77. A civil engineer by training, Achuthan Kudallur was a self-taught abstract artist and a highly respected name in the contemporary art fields of South India.
  • He was part of the Madras Art Club, which operated within the Government College of Art, Chennai, and later shifted to Painting Abstracts.
