  1. Egypt added as fourth new member of BRICS New Development Bank 
  • Egypt has been included as the fourth new member of the BRICS New Development Bank (NDB) on 29 December 2021.
  • Earlier in September 2021, Bangladesh, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Uruguay were admitted as new members of the Shanghai-based NDB.
  • The NDB was established six years ago in July 2015 by the BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa).
  1. Germany shuts down three of its six nuclear power plants.

  • Germany has shut down three of its six nuclear power plants, as part of the country’s phase-out of nuclear energy and turned its focus to renewables. The government decided to speed up the phasing out of nuclear power following Japan’s Fukushima reactor meltdown in 2011 when an earthquake and tsunami destroyed the coastal plant in the world’s worst nuclear disaster since Chernobyl in 1986.
  • The plants in Brokdorf in the northern state of Schleswig-Holstein, Grohnde in Lower Saxony and Unit C at Gundremmingen in Bavaria in the south shut down late yesterday after three and half decades in operation.

National News

  1. UP Govt renames Jhansi Railway station as Veerangana Laxmibai Railway Station
  • The Uttar Pradesh government has renamed the Jhansi Railway Station in Jhansi as ‘Veerangana Laxmibai Railway Station’ on December 29, 2021 as a tribute to Rani Laxmibai, the Queen of Jhansi.
  • With the change of name, the new code of the railway station will be ‘VJLB’.
  • Earlier the code of Jhansi railway station was ‘JHS’.
  1. Prime Minister Modi inaugurates and lays foundation stone of 23 projects worth over Rs 17500 crore in Haldwani

  • Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi inaugurated and laid foundation stones of 23 projects worth over Rs 17,500 crore in Haldwani in Uttarakhand on December 30, 2021.
  • PM also announced a new scheme worth Rs. 2,000 crore to be introduced for the overall development of the water, sewage, road, parking, and street lights infrastructure of Haldwani.
  • One of the project whose foundation stone was laid is the Lakhwar Multipurpose Project. This project was first conceived in 1976 and was pending for many years. It is to be built at a cost of about Rs. 5,750 crore. The plant will produce 300 MW hydro power to supply drinking water to the six states which are Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Delhi, Himachal Pradesh and Rajasthan.
  • Apart from this, multiple road projects were also inaugurated or foundation stones were laid, including inauguration of three different stretches of the Chardham all-weather road which have been widened.
  • The foundation stone of AIIMS Rishikesh satellite centre was laid at Udham Singh Nagar and Jagjivan Ram Government Medical College at Pithoragarh.
  • Other foundation stone included Aroma Park at Kashipur and Plastic Industrial Park at Sitarganj
  • Several other projects related to housing, sanitation and drinking water supply across the state were also inaugurated.
  1. Prime Minister Modi transfers 10th installment of PM Kisan scheme to the bank accounts of 10 crore farmers.

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi has released the 10th installment of financial benefits under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana through video conferencing. More than 20 thousand crore rupees were transferred to more than ten crore farmer families.
  • Shri Modi also released equity grant of over Rs 14 crore to about 351 Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs), which would benefit more than one lakh 24 thousand farmers.

  1. SBI acquires 9.95% stake in India International Clearing Corporation (IICC)
  • India’s largest public sector lender, State Bank of India (SBI) has announced the acquisition of 9.95 per cent stake in India International Clearing Corporation (IICC) Ltd.
  • This 9.95 per cent stake will be subject to a maximum investment of Rs. 34.03 crores.
  • IICC Gujarat International Finance is the first International Clearing Corporation established at the International Financial Services Center (GIFT IFSC) of Tec-City.

Sports News

  1. South Africa’s Quinton de Kock announces retirement from Test cricket
  • South Africa’s star wicketkeeper-batsman, Quinton de Kock has announced his retirement from Test cricket with immediate effect on December 30, 2021.
  • The 29-year-old former Test captain, de Kock made his Proteas Test debut against Australia in 2014 at Gakbarah.
  • The Proteas is the national cricket team of South Africa.
  • He played a total of 54 Test matches, and scored 3300 runs with the highest score of 141 not out at an average of 38.82 and a strike rate of 70.93.

  1. Kishore Kumar Yedam conferred with World CEO Winner of the Year 2021 award.
  • The Most Prominent C-Level Executive Awards have crowned Kishore Kumar Yedam as the ‘World CEO Winner of the Year 2021’.
