National News

  1. Ram Nath Kovind confers honorary rank of ‘General of Indian Army’ on Nepal Army Chief Gen Prabhu Ram Sharma
  • President Ram Nath Kovind has honored Nepal Army Chief General Prabhu Ram Sharma with the honorary rank of ‘General of the Indian Army’.
  • General Prabhu Ram Sharma is on a four-day visit to India to explore ways to expand bilateral defense cooperation. The leaders of India and Nepal have often noted the age-old “bread beti” relationship.
  • Nepal conferred the honorary rank of ‘General of Nepal Army’ to Indian Army Chief General MM Naravane in November 2020.
  1. Indian Navy Commissions fourth Scorpene-class submarine INS Vela

  • The Indian Navy received the fourth Scorpene class submarine under Project 75 on November 09, 2021 after completing all the trails at sea.
  • The ship has been inducted into the Navy as INS Vela.
  • Under Project 75, six Scorpene-designed submarines are being built at Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) Mumbai in collaboration with M/s Naval Group, France.
  • The first three submarines operating under Project-75 are INS Karanj, INS Kalvari and INS Khanderi.
  • Currently the Indian Navy has 12 submarines. Apart from this, there are two nuclear submarines INS Arihant and INS Chakra.

Banking News

  1. RBI launches Retail Direct Scheme for retail individual investors to buy G-secs
  • Before this, institutional investors (like banks, insurance companies) could trade in government securities. But with the launch of RBI-RD Scheme, retail investors can also trade in government security directly, using the online portal (https://rbiretaildirect.org.in) developed by the Reserve Bank of India. 
  • Retail Direct Gilt (RDG) Account: To trade in G-secs the retail investors will have to open a Retail Direct Gilt (RDG) Account with RBI after which they can make investments in the Government security market via the following routes:
  • Primary issuance of government securities: Investors can place bid as per the non-competitive scheme for participation in primary auction of government securities and procedural guidelines for SGB issuance.
  • Secondary market: Investors can buy and sell government securities on NDS-OM (‘Odd Lot’ and ‘Request for Quotes’ segments).
  • The Payments for investment in Government Security can be done using saving bank account (which can be linked with RDG Account) through internet banking or Unified Payments Interface (UPI). 
  • RBI will not charge any fee for opening and maintaining the ‘Retail Direct Gilt account’ from the customers.

  • World Diabetes Day is observed every year on 14 November.
  • World Diabetes Day was started in 1991 by the IDF and the World Health Organization (WHO) in response to the rapid rise of diabetes around the world.

  1. Children’s Day: 14th November

  • On 14 November, Children’s Day is celebrated every year to mark the birth anniversary of the first Prime Minister of India, Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru. Children’s Day is known as ‘Children’s Day’ in India. The day aims to raise awareness about the rights, care and education of children. On this day many educational and motivational programs are organized by and for the children across the country.

History of Children’s Day:

  • Jawaharlal Nehru, who was the first Prime Minister of India, was quite famous among children and was popularly known as ‘Chacha Nehru’. After his death in 1964, it was decided to move the celebrations of Children’s Day to 14 November as a mark of his respect and to remember his love for children. A resolution was passed in the Parliament and since then Children’s Day is celebrated on 14 November every year in India. Notably, Children’s Day was first celebrated in India on November 20, 1956 with Universal Children’s Day.

  1. Philosopher Koneru Ramakrishna Rao passes away at 89
  • Koneru Ramakrishna Rao, former Vice-Chancellor of Andhra University and Padma Shri awardee, has passed away at the age of 89. He was suffering from a brief illness.
  • Ramakrishna Rao, during his tenure as the Vice-Chancellor of Andhra University and the President of APSCHE, was instrumental in bringing about several curriculum reforms to connect the classrooms with the community.
  • He was a famous educationist, teacher and philosopher.
  • He had served as the President of the US-based Parapsychological Association and the Indian Academy of Applied Psychology.
  • In 2011, he was awarded the Padma Shri award.
