  1. Poet Maya Angelou becomes the first black woman to appear on US coin
  • The US Treasury has minted coins featuring the poet Maya Angelou—the first black woman known as a quarter—on a US 25-cent coin. Angelou, a poet and activist, was the first black woman to write and perform poetry at the presidential inauguration.
  • In 2010, he was given the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest American civilian award, by President Barack Obama.
  • The new coin still features the view of George Washington on the “head” side, while the “tail” side honors Angelou by invoking one of his most famous works, the autobiography “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings”.
  1. South Africa Launches 1st ‘made In Africa’ Satellites
  • South Africa has launched its first satellite constellation developed entirely in the continent of Africa. As part of American aerospace company SpaceX’s Transporter-3 mission, three locally produced nanosatellites, which make up the nation’s first Maritime Domain Awareness Satellite (MDASAT) constellation, were launched from Cape Canaveral in the United States.
  • Transporter-3, SpaceX’s third dedicated rideshare mission, carried a total of 105 spacecraft for various organizations and governments, including CubeSats, Microsats, PocketCubes and Orbital Transfer Vehicles.

  1. GoI launches stamp to mark 1 year of Covid vaccination
  • The Indian government on Sunday released a commemorative postage stamp on COVID-19 vaccination to mark the first anniversary of the country’s national immunization program against the virus.
  • The commemorative stamp design shows a health worker vaccinating a senior citizen with the COVID-19 vaccine along with an image of a ‘COVAXIN’ vial.
  • This stamp reflects the remarkable work done by our frontline healthcare workers and scientific community across the country to save people from the COVID pandemic.

States News

  1. 9th women National Ice Hockey Championship-2022 begins
  • In Himachal Pradesh, the 9th women National Ice Hockey Championship-2022 was inaugurated at Ice Skating Rink, Kaza in Lahaul Spiti district. For the first time in the state, Ice Hockey competition & development camp is being organized at the national level.
  • Teams from Himachal Pradesh, Telengana, Ladakh, ITBP Ladakh, Chandigarh & Delhi are participating in this mega event. The state Chief Minister, Jai Ram Thakur inaugurated the Championship.
  • This is the first time that National Level Ice Hockey Competition and Development Camp was being held in the State. In 2019, the first Basic Ice Hockey ten days Coaching Camp was organized at Kaza by State Youth Services and Sports Department, in collaboration with the Ladakh Women Ice Hockey Foundation.
  • The State Government has already announced the High-Altitude Sports Center at Kaza with an estimated cost of Rs. 16 crore.

  • Lavani artist from Maharashtra, Sumit Bhale of Phulbari taluka has won gold medal at International Folk Art Festival in Dubai. With his stellar performances, Maharashtra’s Vaibhav has been widely appreciated on the international stage.
  • Lavani is a genre of music popular in Maharashtra and is a combination of traditional song and dance, typically performed to the beat of the dholki, a percussion instrument.
  1. National Startup Awards 2021 announced
  • The National Startup Awards 2021 is the second edition of the award ceremony envisioned by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT).
  • A total of 46 startups have been recognized by the Government of India along with 1 Incubator and 1 Accelerator as winners of National Startup Awards 2021. They have been awarded for their contribution in their respective fields.
  1. India’s Navdeep Kaur wins Best National Costume award at Mrs World 2022 pageant
  • India’s Navdeep Kaur has won the award for the Best National Costume at the prestigious Mrs World 2022 pageant in Nevada, Las Vegas. She is the winner of Mrs India World 2021, was representing the country at Mrs World 2022. Navdeep hails from a small town near Odisha’s Steel City, Rourkela.
  • The “avant garde” outfit was inspired by Kundalini Chakra, which “symbolises the movement of energy in chakras of the body from the base to the spine up through the crown”.
  • Cobra embellishments on the shoulder were added to represent the “mystical serpent native to India”, while the golden colour was chosen as it represents novelty, power and glory.

  1. Russia’s Aslan Karatsev wins Sydney Tennis Classic
  • In tennis, Aslan Karatsev defeated Andy Murray 6–3, 6–3 to win the men’s singles title in the Sydney Tennis Classic final, and claim his third ATP Tour title.
  • The women’s singles title was claimed by Spanish world number 9 Paula Badosa, who defeated Barbora Krejcikova 6-3 4-6 7-6 (4) to capture her third career title.

  1. Former PM of Japan Toshiki Kaifu passes away
  • Former Prime Minister of Japan Toshiki Kaifu passed away in Japan at the age of 91. He served as Prime Minister from 1989 to 1991. He is best known for sending Maritime Self-Defense Forces to the Persian Gulf in 1991.
  • After the Gulf War, Japanese Self-Defense Forces were deployed to the Gulf region to conduct minesweeping operations during Kaifu’s tenure.
  1.  Padma Shri winning social activist Shanti Devi passes away
  • Remembered as the voice of the poor, Odisha’s social activist and Padma Shri awardee Shanti Devi has passed away. She was 88 years old. She was also called Lugdi Devi.
  • She was known for her devotion to the underprivileged community and for restoring peace in the Maoist-affected areas in Odisha.
  • He has received the prestigious Padma Shri award from President Ram Nath Kovind on November 9, 2021.
  1. Former Mali’s President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita passes away
  • Former Mali President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita, who was ousted in a military coup, has died. Mr Keita ruled Mali for seven years from September 2013 until he was overthrown in a military coup in August 2020.
  • He also served as the Prime Minister of the country from 1994 to 2000. He promised to restore Mali’s respect as a model for democracy in West Africa as he campaigned as a unified figure in his fractured country, promising “zero tolerance” for corruption.
