  1. Indian-Origin UK Army officer Harpreet Chandi becomes first women of colour to trek solo to South Pole
  • Indian-origin British Sikh Army officer Captain Harpreet Chandi has created history by becoming the first woman of color to complete a solo unsupported expedition to the South Pole.
  • Chandi, 32, completed the 700-mile (1,127-kilometer) trek in 40 days in temperatures of minus 50 degrees Celsius and wind speeds of about 60 mph.
  • Captain Chandy, currently living in London, is also a physiotherapist.

  • In Ladakh, the celebration of the traditional Losar festival was held with gusto and enthusiasm on January 03, 2022.
  • The Losar Festival is celebrated by the Buddhist community in the region to celebrate the beginning of the new year, a traditional event in Tibetan Buddhism.
  • The annual event is celebrated with performances of traditional songs and folk dances of the region and mesmerizing prayers.

  • The flagship UJALA program of the Ministry of Power has successfully completed seven years of distribution and sale of LED lights on January 05, 2022.
  • Affordable LED for All by Unnat Jyoti (UJALA) scheme was launched by the Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi on January 05, 2015.
  • Under this scheme, more than 36.78 crore LEDs have been distributed across the country so far, saving 47,778 million units of electricity per year.

  1. NPCI Bharat BillPay launches Unified Presentment Management System to simplify recurring bill payments
  • NPCI Bharat BillPay (NBBL) has announced the launch of an Integrated Presentation Management System (UPMS) on January 04, 2022.
  • Under the UPMS system, bills will be automatically received from billers and presented to customers for processing in terms of auto-debit and bill payment management.
  • Customers will have complete control to authorize recurring bill payments through the channel of their choice (bank or payment app) and digital payment methods.
  • NPCI Bharat BillPay is a wholly owned subsidiary of National Payment Corporation of India (NPCI) and bill payment service platform.

Business News

  1. Reliance Retail invests $200 mn in Dunzo to acquire 25.8% stake
  • Reliance Retail, the retail arm of Reliance Industries Limited, has acquired a 25.8% stake in online delivery platform Dunzo by investing $200 million (about Rs 1,488 crore).
  • The funding will help Dunzo, a Bengaluru-based startup, become the largest accelerated commerce business in the country.

  1. Three-time Olympic triple jump champion Viktor Saneyev passes away at 76
  • Three-time Olympic champion and former world record holder ace triple jumper Viktor Sanaev has passed away.
  • He was 76 years old.
  • Viktor competed internationally for the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR).
  • He won four Olympic medals, including three gold (Mexico 1968, Munich 1972 and Montreal 1976) and one silver (Moscow 1980).
  • After retirement he moved to Australia where he worked as a coach at the New South Wales Institute of Sport.
