  1. World’s Third-Largest Diamond Unearthed in Botswana
  • A 1,098-carat diamond has been discovered in Botswana by the Botswana Diamond Company, a joint venture between the Government of Botswana and the South African diamond company De Beers.
  • The newly discovered diamond is believed to be the third largest gem-quality stone ever mined in the world.
  • The stone has been presented by Debswana Diamond Company to President of Botswana, Mokgweetsi Masisi.
  • The largest diamond ever recovered is the 3,106-carat Cullinan stone discovered in South Africa in 1905, followed by the 1,109-carat Lacedi La Rona, discovered by Lukara Diamonds in Botswana in 2015.
  1. Ebrahim Raisi wins Iran’s 2021 Presidential Election
  • Ibrahim Raisi has won the 2021 Iranian presidential election, receiving 62 percent of the votes with nearly 90 percent of the ballots counted.
  • Raisi, 60, will replace Hassan Rouhani in August 2021 to begin his four-year term.
  • He is also the Chief Justice of Iran since March 2019.

  1. Ireland All Rounder Kevin O’Brien announces retirement from ODI cricket
  • Ireland all-rounder Kevin O’Brien has announced his retirement from One Day International cricket, after playing his last match for the country against the Netherlands on June 7, 2021.
  • The 37-year-old O’Brien, will continue to represent Ireland in both T20s and Tests. 
  • The legendary player scored 3619 runs in his 141 innings in 153 ODIs for Ireland at a strike rate of 88.79. He is the third highest run-scorer for Ireland in ODIs behind Sterling and Porterfield.
  • Apart from this, he picked 114 ODI wickets, which is the highest by any Irish player.
  • He also holds the record of most catches by an Irish player, pouching 68 catches in total.

  1. DPIIT Secretary Guruprasad Mohapatra Passes Away Due to Covid at 59
  • Shri Guruprasad Mohapatra, Secretary, Department of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) has passed away due to COVID-19 related complications. He was 59 years old.
  • Before being appointed as the DPIIT Secretary in August 2019, Mohapatra served as the Chairman of the Airports Authority of India (AAI).
  • Mohapatra was a Gujarat cadre 1986 batch IAS officer, who had earlier served as joint secretary in the Department of Commerce.
  1. The Flying Sikh ‘Milkha Singh’ passes away at 91 after long battle with Covid-19
  • Legendary Indian sprinter Milkha Singh has passed away due to post-Covid complications. He was 91 years old.
  • Milkha Singh was being treated at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education & Research (PGIMER) in Chandigarh.
  • Last week, he had lost his former national volleyball captain wife Nirmal Kaur due to same Covid-complications.
