International News

  1. FATF retains Pakistan on its ‘Grey List’ of countries, while three new countries added
  • The global terror financing watchdog Financial Action Task Force (FATF) has retained Pakistan on its ‘Grey List’ of countries, due to its failure to fulfill remaining FATF mandates within stipulated time.
  • Pakistan has addressed 30 of the 34 action plan items, and only four action items remain to be completed. In June 2021, FATF gave three months to Pakistan, to fulfil the remaining conditions by October.
  • Meanwhile three new countries have also been added to the Paris-based FATF’s Grey List. These are Turkey, Jordan, and Mali.
  • Pakistan has been on the Grey List by the FATF since June 2018 due to deficiencies in its counter-terror financing and anti-money laundering regimes and failure to comply with the FATF mandates.
  • Being in the grey list, Pakistan cannot get financial aid from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), World Bank, Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the European Union.
  1. South Korea flight tests first homegrown space rocket “Nuri”

  • South Korea recently launched its first indigenously developed rocket, known as “Korean Satellite Launch Vehicle II” or “Nuri”.
  • The launch vehicle lifted off from the Naro Space Center in Goheung on an island about 300 miles (500 kilometers) south of Seoul.
  • The Nuri rocket is 47.2 meters long and weighs 200 tons. The three-stage rocket is powered by six liquid fuel engines. It has been built at an estimated cost of 2 trillion won (£1.23bn or $1.6bn).
  1. China launches satellite ‘Shijian-21’
  • China successfully launched a new satellite named Shijian-21 on October 24, 2021.
  • The satellite will be used for testing and validation of space debris mitigation technologies.
  • Shijian-21 was launched on a Long March-3B carrier rocket from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center in southwest China’s Sichuan province.

National News

  1. DRDO Successfully flight-tests High-Speed Expendable Aerial Target ‘ABHYAS’
  • Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) successfully flight tested the High-Speed ​​Expandable Aerial Target (HEAT)-Exercise from Integrated Test Range (ITR), Chandipur off the coast of Bay of Bengal in Odisha on October 22, 2021. .
  • The exercise has been designed and developed by Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE), Bengaluru, a DRDO laboratory for the Indian Armed Forces.
  • The aerial vehicle exercise can be used as an aerial target for evaluation of various missile systems.
  1. Chhattisgarh Launches “Shri Dhanwantri Generic Medical Store” Scheme

  • Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel has launched a scheme titled ‘Shri Dhanwantri Generic Medical Store’ which aims to provide medicines at low and affordable rates to consumers.
  • Under the ‘Shri Dhanwantri Generic Medical Store’ scheme, Generic medicines will be 50 to 71 percent cheaper at these medical stores.
  • The scheme will be run by Urban Administration and Development Department.
  • It is proposed to set up 188 medical stores in 169 urban bodies of the state.
  • These medical stores will sell 251 types of generic medicines and 27 surgical products.
  • The initiative is part of the state government’s effort to make healthcare services accessible to the poorest of poor in the state.
  1. Tamil drama film Koozhangal is India’s official entry for Oscars 2022

  • Tamil-language drama film Koozhangal (internationally translated as Pebble) has been selected as India’s official entry for the 94th Academy Awards (Oscars 2022).
  • The film is directed by Vinothraj PS and produced by Vignesh Shivan and Nayanthara.
  • The 94th Academy Awards are due to take place in Los Angeles on March 27, 2022.
  1. Adidas ropes in Deepika Padukone as Global brand ambassador
  • German sportswear brand Adidas has roped in Bollywood actress Deepika Padukone as the global ambassador for women’s sports.
  • Deepika will represent the Adidas women globally.
  • She joins adidas’ elite list of female brand ambassadors in India, which also includes Mirabai Chanu; boxers Lovlina Borgohain, Nikhat Zareen and Simranjit Kaur; Sprinter Hima Das, and squash player Dipika Pallikal.
  1. Election Commission of India launches Garuda App for Digital Mapping of Polling Booths
  • The Election Commission of India (ECI) has launched Garuda App for digital mapping of all polling stations, so that election work can be completed faster, smarter, transparent and on time.
  • Through the Garuda App, Booth Level Officers (BLOs) will upload photos and location information of polling stations along with data such as latitude and longitude of the center from their registered mobile numbers.
  • The app will also help reduce paperwork.
  1. Centre plans to form empowered group of secretaries under Cabinet secretary to review implementation of PM GatiShakti

  • The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) has decided to set up an institutional framework to implement, support and monitor the entire programme of PM GatiShakti– the national master plan for ‘multi-modal connectivity’.
  • Under this, the government will constitute an empowered group of secretaries (EGOS), a network planning group and a technical support unit.
  • EGOS: This will have the cabinet secretary as the Chairperson, the head of the commerce ministry’s logistics division as convenor and secretaries of 18 ministries as members.
  • Term of Refenerence of EGOS : Review implementation of the programme and prescribe norms for undertaking any subsequent amendments to it.
  • Network Planning Group: This group will assist the EGOS and consist of heads of such wings of respective infrastructure ministries.
  • Technical support unit: It will have experts from various infrastructure sectors, including aviation, maritime, rail, roads and highways, ports, etc, to oversee the complexities involved in the overall integration of networks.

Banking News

  1. RBI introduces Scale Based Regulation (SBR) for NBFCs
  • The Reserve Bank of India has put in place a revised regulatory framework for NBFCs which is a Scale Based Regulation (SBR). These guidelines shall be effective from October 01, 2022.
  • Now for regulation of NBFCs under the new Scale Based Regulation (SBR), RBI has categorized NBFCs into four layers (or 4 scales) based on their size, activity, and perceived riskiness. These are: NBFC – Base Layer (NBFC-BL), NBFC – Middle Layer (NBFC-ML), NBFC – Upper Layer (NBFC-UL) and NBFC – Top Layer (NBFC-TL).
  • The Top Layer will ideally remain empty. This layer can get populated if the Reserve Bank is of the opinion that there is a substantial increase in the potential systemic risk from specific NBFCs in the Upper Layer.
  • Minimum Net Owned Fund Requirement: Regulatory minimum Net Owned Fund (NOF) for NBFC-ICC, NBFC-MFI and NBFC-Factors will be increased to Rs. 10 crore (from Rs 2 crore at present).
  • For NBFC-P2P, NBFC-AA, and NBFCs with no public funds and no customer interface, the NOF shall continue to be Rs. 2 crore.
  • Ceiling on IPO Funding: There will be a ceiling of Rs. 1 crore per borrower for financing subscription to Initial Public Offer (IPO) of NBFCs. This IPO ceiling will come into effect from April 01, 2022.

  1. IFFI to give Satyajit Ray Lifetime Achievement Award to filmmakers Martin Scorsese and Istvan Szabo
  • Hungarian filmmaker Istvan Szabo and Hollywood filmmaker Martin Scorsese has been chosen as the recipient of the inaugural Satyajit Ray Lifetime Achievement Award for Excellence in Cinema.
  • The award will be given at the 52nd edition of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI), which will be held in Goa from 20th -28th November 2021.
  • The award has been instituted to mark the the birth centenary of the maestro of Indian cinema Shri Satyajit Ray, in 2021, and will be given at the IFFI every year starting from this year.
  • The Award consists of Rs 10 lakh cash prize, a certificate, Shawl, a Silver Peacock medal and a Scroll.

  • Victor Denmark Open 2021 badminton tournament was held from 19 to 24 October 2021 at Odense Sports Park in Odense, Denmark.

  1. Nagaland to host 56th National Cross Country Championship in 2022
  • The 2022 South Asian Federation Cross Country Championships is scheduled to be held in Kohima, Nagaland on January 15, 2022.
  • Apart from this, the 56th National Cross Country Championships will also be clubbed with the South Asian Federation Cross Country Championships. This will be the first national athletics event organized by Nagaland.
  • Top athletes from the eight south Asian countries will take part in the day-long international sports event.
  • The championship will involve running on different types of terrain including sprint over dirt, jog downhill and mount uphill.

  • The International Day of Diplomats is celebrated on 24 October every year.

  • The first International Day of Diplomats was celebrated in Brasília on 24 October 2017.

  • Every year 24 October is celebrated as United Nations Day since 1948.
  • It was on this day in 1945 that the Charter of the United Nations came into force.
  • With the ratification of the UN Charter by the majority of its signatories, including the five permanent members of the Security Council, the United Nations officially came into being.
