National

  1. National Intelligence Grid (NATGRID) Bengaluru campus inaugurated by Amit Shah 
  • Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated the National Intelligence Grid (NATGRID) complex in Bengaluru. According to Home Minister Amit Shah, since the beginning of the Narendra Modi government, there has been an attitude and behavior of zero tolerance towards terror and terrorism.
  • Shri Amit Shah remarked during the inauguration of the National Intelligence Grid (NATGRID) complex in Bengaluru that the security requirements in terms of data, scope, and complexity have increased dramatically as compared to the previous issues.
  • According to Mr. Amit Shah, there is a need for the legal and security authorities to have automatic, secure, and quick access to the data collected from reliable sources.
  • The government has entrusted NATGRID with the responsibility of setting up and operating a state-of-the-art and innovative information technology infrastructure for receiving data from data collection agencies.
  • The central government will soon prepare a national database to track hawala transactions, terrorist funding, counterfeit cash, narcotics and bomb threats, illegal arms smuggling, and other terrorist operations.

Appointments 

  1.  Nand Mulchandani named as 1st-ever chief tech officer of CIA 
  • Indian-origin Nand Moolchandani has been appointed as the first Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), the first line of defense for the United States.
  • Prior to this, Moolchandani served as the CTO and acting director of the Joint Artificial Intelligence Center under the US Department of Defense. He served as the CEO of several successful startups such as Oblix (acquired by Oracle), Datarmina, OpenDNS, and ScaleXtreme.
  • Moolchandani completed his schooling at Bluebells School International in Delhi between 1979 and 1987 and then went to Cornell University to pursue graduate courses and studies in computer science and mathematics. Moolchandani then earned a Master of Science degree in Management from Stanford and a Master of Public Administration degree from Harvard.

Banking

  1. RBI Monetary Policy: RBI hikes Repo Rate by 40 bps to 4.40 percent 
  • At an unscheduled meeting of the Monetary Policy Committee, however, the central bank upheld the liberal monetary policy. The sudden RBI move the first hike since August 2018 – is expected to raise interest rates in the banking system. Equated monthly installment (EMI) on home, vehicle, and other personal and corporate loans is likely to increase. Deposit rates, mainly fixed tenure rates, are also bound to rise.
  • All six members of the MPC unanimously voted for a hike in rates, maintaining a lenient stance. RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das said that this decision has been taken in view of rising inflation, geopolitical tensions, high crude oil prices, and a shortage of commodities globally.

Ranks and Reports

  1. India ranked 21st in Chainalysis 2021 Cryptocurrency Gains by Country 

According to data from a report released by crypto analytics firm Chainalysis, investors across the world saw total crypto gains of $162.7 billion in 2021 as compared to $32.5 billion in 2020.
This is the second consecutive data generated by Chainalysis. Ethereum is considered to be the most notable gainer among crypto assets. The report notably noted that Ethereum outsold Bitcoin from $76.3 billion globally to $74.7 billion in total gains.
However, India is ranked 21st with an actual profit of around $1.85 billion, while it is topped by the United States with an estimated realized crypto profit of $49.95 billion.
The United Kingdom ranks second after the US with estimated crypto gains of $8.16 billion, Germany ($5.82 billion), Japan ($5.51 billion), and China ($5.06 billion).

  1. DD National Pet Show ‘Best Friend Forever’ Wins ENBA Award 2021 
  • Doordarshan has been awarded the ENBA Awards 2021 for Best Intensive Hindi Series for its TV series based on pet care ‘Best Friend Forever at the 14th edition of Exchange4Media News Broadcasting Awards (ENBA). The show is also available on DD National’s YouTube channel, airing every Sunday at 7 pm.
  • The show Best Friend Forever is a half-hour weekly live phone-in show on DD National, with two pet experts guiding people about their pet care, their feeding, nutrition, routine health check-ups, vaccinations, and more. Let’s talk about pet-related issues.
  • The main aim and objective of the show are to maintain two-way communication where viewers can directly call and talk to experts, and share their concerns and experiences.   1.  Khelo India University Games 2021 won by JAIN University
  • Jain (Deemed-to-be University) won the 2nd edition of Khelo India University Games 2021 with 20 Gold, 7 Silver, and 5 Bronze medals. Lovely Professional University (LPU) has secured the second position with 17 gold medals and Panjab University has secured the third position with 15 gold medals.
  • Shiv Sridhar has emerged before us as a star swimmer by winning 11 golds. The closing ceremony of KIUG took place at Sri Kanteerava Outdoor Stadium in Bengaluru and Veera was the mascot of KIUG 2021.
  • A total of 20 sports were played in the second edition of the Khelo India University Games and 3900 students from 210 universities participated in these Khelo. The Games marked the first time in the history of national sports that indigenous sports competitions such as Yogasan and Mallakhambha were introduced.

Days

  1. World Portuguese language day 2022: 05th May
  • The date of 5 May was officially established in 2009 by the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP) – an intergovernmental organization that has been in official agreement and partnership with UNESCO since 2000, and which supports the Portuguese language.
