In most of the 54 Commonwealth countries, Commonwealth Day is traditionally celebrated on the second Monday of March, with the British Queen giving a speech over the radio. However, India and some other countries celebrate it on 24 May.
The theme of Commonwealth Day 2022 is ‘Providing a Common Future’, highlighting how the fifty-four member states of the Commonwealth family can help achieve goals such as fighting climate change, promoting good governance, and improving ‘Innovation, Engagement, and Transformation’.

Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya addresses the 75th session of the World Health Assembly in Geneva

Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya stressed the need to build a resilient Global Supply Chain to enable equitable access to vaccines and medicines.
Addressing the 75th session of the World Health Assembly in Geneva, the Minister called for streamlining WHO’s approval process for vaccines and therapeutics and strengthening WHO to build a more resilient global health security architecture.
Mr. Mandaviya reiterated India’s commitment to building a more resilient global health security architecture.
The Minister noted that India believes that this year’s theme linking peace and health, is timely and pertinent because there can be no sustainable development and universal health and wellbeing without peace.
At the session, India also raised dismay and concern over WHO’s recent exercise on all-cause excess mortality, where country-specific authentic data published by the statutory authority has not been taken into account.

US President Joe Biden says America will intervene militarily if China invades Taiwan

US President Joe Biden has said that the US will intervene militarily if China attacks Taiwan.
He said the burden of protecting Taiwan was “even stronger” after Russia’s actions in Ukraine. It was one of the most powerful presidential statements in support of self-government in decades.
The US has traditionally avoided providing explicit security guarantees to Taiwan, with which it no longer has a mutual defense treaty.
The Taiwan Relations Act of 1979, which governed US relations with the island, does not require the US to take military measures to defend Taiwan if it is invaded by China. However, it mandates the US to ensure that Taiwan has the resources to defend itself and to prevent any unilateral change of situation in Taiwan by Beijing.

Jose Ramos-Horta was sworn in as president of East Timor

Former freedom fighter and Nobel Peace Prize laureate, Jose Ramos-Horta has been sworn in as the President of East Timor (Timor-Leste) ahead of celebrations of the 20th anniversary of independence for Asia’s youngest country.
He defeated his fellow freedom fighter Francisco “Lu Olo” Guterres in the election.
Ramos-Horta was Prime Minister from 2006 to 2007 and President from 2007 to 2012. East Timor is celebrating the 20th anniversary of the independence of Asia’s youngest country.
