National News

  1. India successfully test fires indigenous subsonic cruise missile Nirbhay off Odisha coasts
  • Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) successfully test-fired the subsonic cruise missile ‘Nirbhay’ from an Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur in Balasore, Odisha on June 24, 2021.
  • This was the eighth test flight of the missile. Nirbhay’s first test flight took place on 12 March 2013.
  • Nirbhay is a long-range, all-weather, subsonic cruise missile indigenously designed and developed by DRDO.
  • It has a strike range of about 1500 km.

  1. Kotak Mahindra Bank launches Payment app ‘Pay Your Contact’
  • Kotak Mahindra Bank (KMBL) has launched an innovative payment facility called ‘Pay Your Contact’ for its customers on its Mobile Banking App.
  • This facility allows bank customers to send or pay money to any of their contacts across all payment apps by simply entering the beneficiary’s mobile number.
  • This facility is available for Kotak Mobile Banking App users only. Money can be sent to beneficiaries who already have UPI ID or who have Kotak Bank account.
  • Pay Your Contacts uses the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) platform to send money and hence customers no longer need to remember bank account numbers or IFSC codes or UPI IDs to send or pay money.

  1. India’s Official Olympic Theme song ‘Lakshya Tera Samne Hai’ Composed & Sung by Mohit Chauhan
  • The “Official Olympic Theme Song” for the Indian contingent was launched by Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju on June 23, 2021, during an event organized by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA).
  • The song titled “Lakshya Tera Samne Hai” has been composed and sung by Singer Mohit Chauhan, and lyrics are penned by his wife Ms. Prathna Gahilote.
  • Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju was the chief guest during the event, which was also attended by Secretary, GoI, Ministry of Sports Shri Ravi Mittal, IOA President Shri Narinder Batra and Secretary-general Shri Rajeev Mehta and DG SAI Shri Sandip Pradhan
  • The Tokyo Olympic Games will start from 23 July 2021 and run till 08 August 2021.
  • So far over 100 Indian athletes have qualified for the event.

  1. John McAfee, founder of McAfee antivirus software, passes away at 75 by suicide
  • British-American Software pioneer, John David McAfee, the creator of the McAfee antivirus software, has passed away, “apparently from suicide”.
  • He was 75.
  • John was found dead in his cell in a jail near Barcelona, where he had been since October 2020, for evading taxes.
  • The incident happened shortly after his extradition to the United States was authorized by Spain’s National Court, on criminal charges filed in Tennessee by the Justice Department’s tax division.
  • He was accused to have deliberately failed to file tax returns between 2014 and 2018, despite earning millions from consulting work, cryptocurrencies, among other things.

  • World Vitiligo Day is observed on 25 June to create global awareness about vitiligo.
  • Vitiligo is a skin disorder that causes loss of pigmentation in the skin leading to the formation of various patterns on the skin due to loss of pigment.
  • Vitiligo is often called a disease instead of a disorder and that can have a significantly negative social or psychological impact on patients.
  • The first World Vitiligo Day was observed on June 25, 2011.
  1. Day of the Seafarer: 25 June
  • The International Maritime Organization (IMO) celebrates the annual Day of the Seafarer (DoS) on June 25 each year to pay respect to Seafarers and sailors who help the entire world function by conducting sea transport.
  • The day was proposed by International Maritime Organization (IMO) in 2010 to celebrate the contribution of seafarer to the world economy and the civil society.
  • This special day has been celebrated since 2011.
  • 2021 marks the 11th anniversary of DoS
  • The theme of 2021 campaign is :“Seafarers: at the core of shipping’s future”
